I remember having same issue with the snapping of pieces being off set. I was told to use my F6 and F7 keys to get the off set back to normal. As for leveling the ground make a Hoe to flatten or fill holes.

The limit is specifically for "Weight", if you build wood beams that touch the ground near the squares that are turning red it'll let you build further/higher, just to add to that.

I found snapping at first to be super frustrating,now...kinda frustrating. I take my time now and look directly at the construction I want/need to snap to and get the color for stability to pop, then I look directly at the face I snap to and you'll see a small yellow throbbing plane/polygon, that is the sweet spot for finishing construction. Overlapping objects do indeed complicate the process.

It's not perfect, but it is quite workable with patience.

Building steps/scaffolding just to get the right angle is definitely needed. I wish when you spot the face for snapping, the system scaled out the surface area, as thin structures do loose their 'snap' location very easily.

The snap points for building in this game are different from the 'standard' building game.
You very often need to build a scaffolding just to see the attachment points for roofs, 'til you just kinda get the hang of things. I've never understood that. I guess cuz they allow 'layered' building, where you put several pieces together overlapping...

Building in this game takes trial and error practice. But it isn't perfect and is frustrating to get right. As players mentioned earlier you might need the right angle. Try low and high.
For a survival game to have such a rewarding build mechanic is why i love this game.

you have to aim at the edge you want to connect to. there's also a build limit from the ground, you can see it displayed in the color of the parts you're putting down. blue is touching the ground and then green through red is how far it is. anything red won't be able to have more parts stuck on it unless they're not getting further from the ground in part count.

Also use Ladder by building one to reach higher snapping points. And make an hoe as this tool complements the hammer by flattening the ground. If you still have problems then youtube is your friend. Good luck
