Just some random thoughts
Okay so I don't own this but I'm interested and would love to buy it on sale, I've watched a bunch of lets plays read some stuff and it sounds and looks good but...maybe I think too much because it all makes no real sense...I get that the fun to be had is in finishing the game but really WTH...so I'm a dead warrior, I get carted off to Valheim to serve Odin, defeat his enemies and restore order, I've already died and will die many more times before it's over meanwhile my buddies who likely died in battle with me went off to Valhalla where they are singing and drinking mead, eating giant turkey legs and have beautiful women to share their hearth and homes but me...I get to be Odin's b***h and clear the baddies out of Valheim and what is my reward for doing this? seems I get to start a new game and do it over and over for all eternity because once it's done and the land is free of the evil bad guys I'm gonna be the only freakin person sitting in the massive cool mead hall I can now build.
Maybe I'll wait a bit and catch the next sale, maybe the dev's will add some dead NPC's to hang out with me after I do all Odin's dirty work.

Here's a random thought: Shadray's original post states "Okay so I don't own this but I'm interested and would love to buy it on sale."LOL...I bought the game a few hours later, after some serious thought.
Yet to the right of Shadray's name is a little mouse icon which indicates ownership of the game.
What ever this liar is selling, I am not interested and not buying.
I guess calculating the sequence of events is too hard for some folks that are focused on the thrill of dissing others.

As others have said the game isn't finished yet, so we don't know what the developers have in mind for the end.
One way I think of it which meshes quite well I think with OP is maybe we were a good warrior, but perhaps not quite great enough for automatic admission to Valhalla, so since there's some dirty work needs doing that's our task now, and Valhalla awaits should we succeed.
Alternatively we were one of the the greatest warriors ever to live hence were chosen for this mighty task, and it should be considered an honour to venture forth into battle even after death, this time in service of the gods.
Either way works for me personally as canon tbh, even though I don't really think about that aspect too much and just enjoy the fun norse themed open world game with a good building system to run around twhacking monsters and building outposts in

You can't finish a game in early access when all things have not been added. We are missing at least 4 more major bosses, and 9 mini-bosses.

There are runestones implying that there were people before us. So it's not only that one character we play where odin decided to throw us into valheim to defeat his enemies.

Yeah, a consistent end is missing, but what will we get: some freaky cinematic like at the start, or a pantheon diving down the sky to pat on our shoulder, or some... big surprise? Anyways, only the end is missing, as you correctly recapped the game's settings. This also helps accepting some devs' choices (not-really-death penalties, hunger/stamina system, former life skills recovery, weird mobs, etc).

You decided to buy the game; you now have to decide how to play it, because for now (in E.A.), you are not bound to do anything in this open, randomly generated world, or to force you on achieving anything, except what you recapped in your OP, and that can stay vague and abstracted for quite a long time (it's just to set the "landscape").

In Metroid, I was just a dude running around an alien world killing ♥♥♥♥, and solving puzzles. Turns out at the end I wasn't a dude , I was a lady. Mother brain , BOOM.
But whats the point? It's dumb. I'm supposed to roll into a ball and go under this stupid ♥♥♥♥? why though?

The fun in this game is what each player decides they want to do. Some want to boss kill as fast as possible, others build a variety of bases, the sailing is a draw for another group and I'm just taking my sweet time inching my way along the progression path - mainly because I stayed away from all the spoilers and youtubes that remove (for me) the sense of exploration and discovery.
I'd say the vibe I'm getting from your 'random thoughts' would tell me to advise you to look elsewhere for rewarding entertainment.

The fun to be had in this game, comes from the journey itself.
This is why I still play Valheim today, 450 hours in.
I still haven't killed the last boss. I kind of don't want to, because when I do that I fear that the journey might end.
Next patch I definitely will though. No kapps
As for the story..
Well, it's a spin-off, this didn't actually happen in Norse mythology to my knowledge, this world doesn't exist.
But yes, you get carried off by Odin's birdo to do Odin's dirty work and no more Valkyries and mead until you're done!

Yeah I get it...I think I would enjoy the gameplay, kinda reminds me of 7DTD just you against the world, maybe if Odin showed up gave you a pat on the back and sent you off to Valhalla I'd feel better about it. I don't know why it bothers me, like I said I tend to overthink things. It's just a game but for some reason I need it to make sense, maybe it would if I knew more about Norse mythology.
