Are Lox based on anything?

A friend said he liked them because he saw them as the dev's acknowledging something about evolution and how we came from fish or lizards or something. I said he's probably overthinking it and told him it's just lizard ox. But If anyone know if it's based on anything or the devs have said anything about them it would be nice to know for curiosity sake.

I always assumed that the name at least was based on Aurochs, a large and long extinct cattle species

But Salmon on a bagel with cream cheese sounds totally gross to me. So I wouldn't know.
It's delicious.

From now on, Banthas it is. :D
And no. I think they paired a lizard head with a buffalo (ox), so... Lox.

Pretty sure it's just short for lizard ox.
