wolf based food doesn't make sense for progression
i'm not getting any food off the mountain that is better than swamp food.. it makes no sense.. wolf meat is plentiful, so wolf jerky and cooked wolf meat are easy to get, but they don't offer an improvement when you are aiming to advance into the plains.. and some of it requires silver to produce, it doesn't really make sense

You don't. Put up your sail, get off the paddle and fight them from the deck. Finding them is not a problem, but, if you're alone, how do you drive the boat in a storm and capture/kill them?

They aren't that tanky if you're at least at the iron age. Before they stick their head out of the water and scream, you can sneak attack them. But by then, if you have the huntsman bow, their health is already at half. Couple more arrows and they're gone. They are really easy to kill solo, believe me. If you're afraid of your boat taking damage, keep a stack of wood in your ship's storage, go to the nearest land and put down a workbench to repair.
The meat floats so you don't need to capture and bring it to land. You only want to capture them if you want the scales, but you don't need to for the meat.

I have killed a few with bows, but then you have to sail your boat around or risk drowning to get the meat. I seem to remember it sinking after a short amount of time as well, but I may be thinking of the scales.
Most of what meat/scales I have I got when one followed me to shore, so I was able to quickly take it down near land, which is much easier.
That said, I never eat the stew because I have no need for it normally, and it seems to precious to waste.

That's why in my previous reply I said to put up the sail. Stop the boat, shoot them with arrows, they die right next to you so you can just hop in the water to grab the loot. Time it right and you can even get the scales without them sinking.

It's been a while since I tried, but they do swim around, and it's generally in a storm. I know the couple of times that I tried it ended up far enough away that I didn't want to swim it. Maybe I'll have to try it again.

Perhaps the wolf-based food you are now able to craft is not meant to help with progression to the Plains. Wolf-based food better than wolf jerky and cooked wolf meat may be dependent upon the discovery of a new ingredient or a new cauldron improvement.
Perhaps your belief that wolf jerky and cooked wolf meat should help with progression to the Plains makes no sense. What leads you to that belief?

good questions.. i have been all over three mountains checking chests since the update and have yet to see an onion seed.. apparently i need to sail to a new area and create some new mountain biome, then keep looking

Eyescream ( very easy to make) + Wolf skever + onion soup are good enogh for plains.
Just be sure you have some good armor on you and always carry a shield (or weapon to parry the moskitos).
I also recomend a anti-poision potion if you go near the new monsters as they hurt a lot.
Also, use stamina food 3x when doing some basic non-danger stuff (like getting wood or stone) and save the good stuff for harder parts. If you are at that point of game with strong armor, the basic mobs will do almost no damage to you.

I prefer higher health in the plains, but that's a personal choice.
You do need to find a new mountain biome to find the seeds. Same for the tarpits in the plains. It has to be a new area.
Unless I'm low on health, I usually just punch the deathsquitos. :-)

Meat floats for ever , so doesnt sink , get close with your boat and jump to the waterThat's why in my previous reply I said to put up the sail. Serpents are so easy to kill with ice arrows ( 3 or 4 )

If you get your boat close enough, you don't even have to go in the water- you can pick up the meat from the boat. It's a PITA to maneuver it so you can get all of it, though.

Get some Serpent Stew. It is really easy to make and you get minimum 3 hours worth of food just from one serpent kill. The hardest part is finding them but if you just sail around the ocean at night and/or during a storm, you'll find them easy.

Finding them is not a problem, but, if you're alone, how do you drive the boat in a storm and capture/kill them?
