Notes from an anti-builder
First off, I"m not against making and beautifying impressive structures late game or in creative mode. I'm not very good at it but am impressed by what others have done. No, I'm talking about building during the early/main part of the run
I use my hoe more in making cart roads in horrible places, boat salvage spots, and navigation beacons than anyplace else except for the rare moat/wall defense. I almost never bother leveling ground for buildings or even fortification walls.
It helps that the vast majority of my buildings are between 2x2 and 4x4 (rarely 5x5) so that sticking struts at the corners where necessary takes care of structural strength needs. Also I tend to use any old ruins that are handy, a couple of patches and repairs and good to go.
As to roads, bridges, and the odd pier; for the most part I don't do anything more than absolutely necessary and I'll unashamedly use 26 degree thatch roofing and floor tiles to avoid major hoe and pickaxe work for cart roads.
I mentioned beacons above - that's my name for a "if I wasn't so lazy I'd build a lighthouse" things consisting of a single raised earth column (height no more than necessary to get above most things nearby) with a campfire on top and a single 2x2 wall plus 45 degree roof to serve dual purpose as reflector and protector.
About the only deviation from the 'lazy builder' behavior on my part is with combat engineering - like I'll build an elevated covered bridge to make hauling iron out of swamps with carts while doubling as fighting platforms for well.. just about everything. Cartway stations atop crypts of course and the elevated cartway tends to meander a bit so as to use 'forever' trees as support rather than an earth column/pole.
None of this type of thing is seen on streams or videos nor in the rare written guides.
So in the end I'm wondering, am I the only 'Ramshackle and proud of it' anti-builder playing?

Put me in the "anti-build guild" as well. I rarely build anything creative or impressive. I'm more about function over form. Not that I don't like looking at what others have done. One of my friends who plays designs things worthy of an architect. It's just not my style.
I once described our shared world as "orc architecture (mine) vs. elven architecture (his)."

I have to agree the term anti-build really does not fit; I go with utilitarian.
And the only early base I will actually improve is one near the stones. I know I will be returning there, it is in the Meadows so relatively safe and is usually on a coastline.
I also tend to 'squat' in ruins I find along the way. Minimal improvements to make a rest stop.
As an aside 'no portal' runs are rather interesting as I find you need to be way more efficient in your resource allocation and transport. The cart is, if not overstuffed, far more useful than most people give it credit for.
Throw in an iron man run and it gives the game a new challenge.

just saying building with function over form in mind is still building and not anti-building

I am not an anti-builder but definitely a boring builder. My house always looks like this:
A two-floor building with crafting on groundfloor and bedroom above so that i can still get the comfort bonuses on the ground level. The building itself is usually very simple looking, the most I can be bothered to do is make some windows.
As for metal production I do make a small camp near the source just to house my forge inside and have some smelters outside because ♥♥♥♥ the cart and shipping metals. I mine until the night, run back to camp to chuck the ores in the smelter, take a portal to my surtling farm for the coal and then teleport to main base where I take care or farming. I never sleep.

None of this sounds like "anti-build" to me. It's more like "practical build". Anti-build has a negative vibe to me. Sounds like someone who refuses to build because they really hate it. Practical-build means not putting in effort beyond the benefits provided. These giant castles and mansions probably don't provide benefits commensurate with the time taken to build them. Building just what you need to be successful and no more just seems like practical common sense.
Also replying to luponix.
Yeah I agree with you both but I used the term 'Anti-Build' meaning not doing more than necessary and definitely not doing much of anything to make it look nice. This is especially true for me because I've been playing no portal runs a lot lately. Investing much in early bases is, to me, just a waste. Especially since I'm liable to recycle early bases and cart the materials away to be reused for another site.
As an example of recycling, that base shown in the first picture no longer exists. I had to kill a few days to ramp up turnip farming and in that time built a horrible bridge that let me cart everything off to the port shown in the second picture. The only thing left is the original house with the comfort items and campfire for resting.
As a side note, I totally forgot about the 'rule of 3 and 40' (semi-spoiler see wiki entry for events) and was just half finished with the bridge when I got a 'The forest is moving'. Worked out well, lots of free lumber and two ancient seeds.

Troll cave entrance is the shiz for anti build, no shelter building to be done everything can fit under it and all comfort can be placed within range easy. Did that a lot on my no static base run or "nomad" run

That's really one of the good parts about Valheim.
You are not really forced to "complete" the game in any way. You just play it how you like it, and if you're not much into building beyond the absolute necessities, hey, that's absolutely fine as well.
I probably would never have the stamina nor will to build anything gigantic and too elaborate, I just stick to my cabins and farms, thank you.
But I do like to make them homely and nice, and I do tend to spend many hours in resource gathering, building, decorating and refining them. Probably easily two thirds of my Valheim time is spent on that part.
But you don't have to! That's one of the freedoms Valheim gives you and a very well thought out one at that.

I would say I am more of an anti builder.
I don't bother with any roads or markers... that is just a waste of time to me.
Don't level ground for buildings and tend to build on hill tops or rocks.
Hoe is pretty much a non used tool except to level a farm area and make some paths in swamps.
When I first started to play I would make a nice house but soon realized I didn't use a fraction of it and was just wasting my time.
I don't "hang out" or role play... and when I am done with one game I will start a fresh one with a new world and character so there really is no point in building grand structures.
Not to say that if I find a nice spot and haven't done something like that before ... like I want to build a house overhanging the edge of the world. Have yet to find the perfect spot though.
Currently doing no death runs so knowing it could end at a moments notice also takes away from wanting to invest a lot of time into a structure.

Don't know if I am anti-builder. I like to think I am efficient builder. I take over and repurpose ruins often. I don't make my builds larger than they need to be to house what I wish to put inside.
Last couple days I have just been getting food. I ran out of shrooms making skewers, so definitely need to get more. I think I will start marking shroom patches on my map.
I still seem to use a lot of wood. I don't want to think about how much lumber-jacking the big builders must do.

That's funny. I had recently had the thought that my build style is pretty much the same as the troll building style from warcraft. I tend to build very open stilt structures usually with railings instead of walls. I once described our shared world as "orc architecture (mine) vs. elven architecture (his)."

Trying this again - forget how to place steam screenshot.
Anyhow, this is from a no portals run just before the base was abandoned.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2826664251
The house is on struts, forge, fermenter, and various upgrades tacked on the back. Very minimal leveling done except to get things like Kiln and Smelter to place. You can see part of the 'farm' - beehives to the left, farm wraps around front of house and almost to the smelter/kiln. The 'moat' on the left is entirely courtesy of the map generator.
BTW: I think I've come up with a better and cheaper way of protecting the big door gates from weather damage. Maybe I'll get a screenshot of that later, it's at my Anti-Port.
Aha, the simpler gate protection works! Here's the Anti-Port with nav beacon, construction dock, and ship storage chest. Salvage slip is between chest and dock.

I have similar habits. I stopped landscaping because I wanted to avoid creating more save lag. I understand that was fixed(?) but I haven't changed my habits. I don't even use a hoe. My personal additions are something I called a dojo fighting platform for raid defense, perches for wolf hunt defense in the mountains and for sniping fulings, and a vast array of coded signposts because I am playing with no map. There are things I want to try with base building, but for some reason I feel compelled to advance the fight. I might try a casual building world next.
