Problem.

Read their news post about modding, and am fine with most of it, but my game automatically downloading someone's "mod" is a big no-no.. It would be far too easy to disguise a virus or ransomware as a mod and have the game download it, this "feature" should be removed for the safety of everyone using the service, or force some kind of warning before any downloads happen at the very least(with the contents of said download made clear(I want to know exactly what it's downloading)).

Me personally, I almost never play on a public server to begin with, but this kind of thing puts all the nails in the coffin.

this is legit a thing that's already a case on multiple mod platforms.

ever played fivem?

in order to join a server the game downloads everything from the server just so you can play with those mods.

it's a normal thing in the modding world, and you're already at risk by downloading mods in the first place.

like omg, this 5 dollar crack i bought isn't actually crack!

underworlds gonna underworld.

Nope I have not, and know not to now, also, me downloading mods of my choice is a bit different then the game doing it without letting me know it's going to happen.

Any mod I download gets scanned while downloading by the browser, and then again by my antivirus before extraction as a manual scan, if it passes both, I'll use it, but will still keep an eye out for a few hours, just in case.

yes downloading mods of your own choice is different but my point was that you're already in the underworld at that point.

any diseases your pc gets is on you.

as for joining modded servers, i would think it's the same concept as clicking the download button on the mod.

you should know what you're getting yourself into, as in do you actually know who runs that server?

and then if so, wouldn't it make sense to find out what dependencies that server has in terms of mods?

responsibility lies entirely with the consumer, it's the same thing as letting your kids watch south park.

also, in every game that this is a thing in, you do in fact have to confirm the download first. it's not automatic unless you explicitly set a setting to do so.

Well, the way they have their post worded, they're saying players may not know they're running with mods unless they're set up specifically to say so, which means it's very possible, and easy to hide the download.

i highly doubt a game that doesn't officially support mods due to the problems they cause would implement that as a feature.

i think you're taking it too literally, and not reading between the lines and seeing what didn't need to be said.

i think it's obvious that wouldn't be the case which is why they didn't say it.

I'll read what's written, doing otherwise would be foolish. If they meant something different they'd have said that instead.

Also, going to point out that they must support mods at least in some fashion if their game is capable of detecting and downloading the modded files, if they didn't support it at all, your game would just crash.

that's your problem.

some things don't need to be said.

like saying "im serving dinner!"

you shouldn't need me to tell you it isn't poisoned.

automatic mod downloads are always something that has to be confirmed by the user, so they didn't actually have to say that did they?

I understand the concern... but I think this still goes to "know who you're playing with." Joining a random server has inherent risks even beyond theoretical mod dependencies (abusive behavior, phishing, using another way to spead viruses, etc.) which, while potentially easier to extricate oneself from are still a possible issue.

I do think a "warning, this is a modded server" even without a list of files, would be appropriate, but not necessarily on Irongate to do. In theory, such a "warning" could also be modded out/hidden as well on the server, though it'd take effort.

Nonsense! The Skyrim modding community looks at your fears and laughs.
Thousands of mods. Over ten years of experience. Millions of downloads...
You're just afraid of what you don't understand. Even for Valheim, there are hundreds of mods that people have been successfully using for years...
Knowledge overcomes the darkness of ignorance and the fear it generates.
