Game makes my GPU heat up to 76C.
I have a RTX 2080 Super and almost all the settings turned to max, but I did not think that a game this rudimentary looking would cause my GPU to heat up more than Red Dead Redemption II, which is the only other game that heats it up that much. I don't know if there's some ridiculous lighting models or shaders at work in Valheim (because it does look amazing despite the pixelation), but I think that's too warm. My system should be able to easily handle Valheim without heating up that much.

Yeah but there seems to be the issue with unlimited fps bug in valheim too. So gpu overheat could be prevented by manually limiting fps in the config files.

By what metric? Your eyes? What makes you think the game is over-stressing GPU loads arbitrarily? compared to other games that afford higher graphicsl power.

Wow nice helping here.... noot...
Well this seem to happen pretty often with rtx cards.
Try to limit your fps and the Hz on your monitor in the config files and in the nvidia tool for the game. Your gpu probably tries to achive limitles fps even if you cant see or expirience it xD.
Sometimes it seems that graphic cards run at maximum if you dont tell them not to do it by limiting it yourself.
This problem needs to be solved by the devs and is probably related to the unity engine too.
What seems to happen pretty often? A card running well within absolutely normal temperature ranges? Yes, that does indeed happen often.
Running well within normal and expected temperature ranges is a funny thing to say "needs to be solved by the devs". You're the one not helping here by trying to conflate a non issue perfectly normal card temperature into some sort of problem. That's just straight trolling.

Not sure if youre circleing around your own bubble or not but higher temperaturs often comes together with higher cooling usage so your rig is louder and in my case i can use it to heat my room in winterdays that way. So there is a clear and easy to identify difference when you start valheim compared to other games that afford higher graphicsl power.
Btw. If your gpu heats up the rest of youre ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ computer starts to heat up too and is louder after a while. So thete is another smal hint that something is wrong when starting this game.
So youre explanation is for this issue that, every rtx user that complains about rtx gpu overheating, since the game launched on steam, is a troll?
So well whats an a solid or good average temperature on a gpu in youre opiniion?
In the past i had one that ran for months on 90 - 108 celcius. That thing id still alive but that isnt normal lol.

I heard about this on Subnautica Community forum and I'm yet to hear what the problem actually is about, perhaps one cannot describe an imaginary issue :manthinking: This problem needs to be solved by the devs and is probably related to the unity engine too.
SN's Unity engine iteration works like crap. Even on high-end systems. On my previous rig (8600k, rtx 2070, 16GB DDR4 3400Mhz, SSD) the FPS counter was showing 100+ FPS while the game was visually stuttering. Not sure what UWE did during development, but they had to limit the number of objects in visual range, thats why we got those pop-ins as a nice extra. And if you increase the LOD from config file, the game goes to hell on stronger systems too. With my new system the general stuttering is gone, but i still have microstutters entering or exiting a base/vehicle.
I only had this "Unity myth" issues playing SN, didnt have problems with other games on Unity. Whatever the Coffey guys did since EA release, Valheim runs MUCH smoother than SN ever did. Not sure if SN got the experimental improvements on live as i have not played it in some months but there was a lot of improvements over the stable iteration.

Those are normal temps for air especially with normal fan profile with some tweaking on fan profile you can go lower maybe

Rudimentary - common mistake. People assume polygons is what makes it a "modern game". Like 5 mil polygons on Lara Croft's butt.
In fact, the most performance draining things are shaders, and this game has plenty of them:
- Tons of screenspace reflections for wet surfaces(including during rain).
- Ocean is the most impressive piece. Pretty cool shader.
- Ambient occlusion.
- Accurate shadows.
With enough shaders, you can put ANY GPU on its knees. So, don't be make a mistake and treat amount of polygons as the only thing that makes the game modern.

How so ? Polygons and textures are not what puts the most stress to the GPU these days (see UE5's Nanite polycount and then disable Lumen and notice how much performance you will get). My system should be able to easily handle Valheim without heating up that much.
If you want to improve them GPU temps, improve its cooling system.
Or, as a workaround, limit your framerate.

They were designed to have specific power output, it is up to the user to use it (or not). Sometimes it seems that graphic cards run at maximum if you dont tell them not to do it by limiting it yourself.

GPU supposed to get hot. As long as you aren't hitting thermal throttle, don't worry about it.
My 2080 gets to 89C which is thermal throttle, but it's a bad Gigabyte card which is almost 3 years old now. So what could one expect?

First of all, look at how much your GPU is utilized while gaming. If it sits at 98-99% all the time, yes, then it's doing max performance - which means it will get hot! It doesn't matter how the game "looks" - it matters how much it is utilizing your GPU.
Secondly, 76 degrees is a perfectly fine temperature for at fully utilized RTX2080S.
Valheim is indeed GPU heavy - and if you turn on all the bells and whistles it will utilize your GPU to the max.

When it comes to desktops pretty much every aspect of cooling is highly controllable by the end user. Learn about proper airflow. Learn about proper fan placement. Learn about fan curves. Learn about managing your frame rate.
And I agree with Mocca. 76c isn't worth worrying about though there are many ways to control your temps with enough research. Your system also shouldn't have to sound like a jet engine.

That's well below the target range for that card, which is 83c at 100%. 76C is not heating up, its working exactly as expected. That's like thinking you are running a fever because your temperature is 37C.
I would suggest you educate yourself on the specs for your hardware so you don't needlessly worry about perfectly normal operation.
