Yep you need the surtling cores to make a smelter and/or a kiln. You put charcoal and ore into a smelter to make tin and copper bars. Then use a forge to combine them into bronze bars

Another way to get cores is in a swamp. The flame sprites spawn near flame geysers you can find in a swamp. They are squishy and can be easily killed with a bow. Mark the geysers on your map and go back when they respawn. Thing is it's the other mobs that make it tricky to farm these.. avoiding aggro and just running away. But a nice source of cores which are also needed for portals

In addition to the others above, I believe Hugin also says in one of the messages that you need a kiln & smelter to refine the ores. Any time you're stuck, check through the log of bird messages to see if there's a tip there.

On that note, you will need a total of 10 cores to make both the forge and kiln, but one thing that might not be obvious is you don't actually need both at the same time... So if luck is against you and you aren't finding enough, as long as you have at least 5 you can build the kiln for some charcoal and then demolish it to make the smelter.

(Edit - I was saying forge when I meant to say smelter. Fixed)

I have the Kiln and smelter, but it wont let me build a forge its not listed. I have 12 cores also?

*edit* So nevermind I needed to have copper in my inventory. It all unlocked.

Have you smelted ore yet? I believe you need a copper bar to unlock the forge.

Probably missing Sutr Core from dungeons, do a dungeon in a Dark Forest biome and pick up the red glowing things.

Surtling Cores would be your next step. Like Boob Goblin said, head to a dungeon in Dark Forest and find cores in there. Ensure you have a decent weapon, armor and shield. Don't get cornered by skeletons. Once you actually have the proper amount of cores, build a kiln and forge. If your lost check google or youtube for more insight.
