Do you know how ((((((Aggravating)))))) it is!

to load up and hit multiplayer !! but every @#$@#$ server is locked pretty much making multiplayer nonexsistant ?? i know the reason ,, i've seen a good example of why but there seriously needs to be a option to turn it off/on !?? also whats the point of claim totems ? if you cant trust people that are already on there? when the only way you can get on is through whitelist 100% its disgusting some of the games out there lately focus on ether driving a wedge between people/ teaching them to prey on others, or feeding destructive tendencies! when if anything it should bring people together for once sigh

Sorry, how is using wards to protect your area from other people treating the game like an MMO?

I disagree that the game is only meant for trusted individuals to join private games. If so, why would the devs bother with the splash message warning players about the dangers of an open server? Why allow players to *not* place a password on the server? The game is slated for 1-10 players, not 1-10 friends. I've presented evidence supporting my perspective. What evidence do you have to say the game isn't meant for *both* friends and randos to play together?

Lastly, there are many games that are multiplayer in nature that support multiple player communities:

- Ark
- Minecraft
- Empyrion
- Space Engineers
... just to name a few. It's kind of absurd to conflate wanting more protections in your personal space so random players can join without fear of griefing and treating a game like an MMO. There are many steps in-between those two points.

Hell, by the very fact Wards are in the game means the devs expected players who don't know / trust each other to play on the same server.

I'm not sure what you're reading exactly. The problem is that you can't trust randos but you do want to allow randos onto your server to build out the population. If that's the case, it'd be nice if wards were more effective in stopping people from even setting foot in the area they're protecting which would allow different communities to occupy different landmasses safe from the fear of griefing. Let me know if there's anything unclear here.

Like a password on a server or something...

No no.. That defeats the purpose of the original post (as I understand it). A segment of the community would like to have open servers so randoms can be invited to join and fill out the world. The problem is the inevitable griefing that comes with randos. Placing a password on a server in this instance isn't a solution...

As a server admin myself, I'd be gung-ho to host community Valheim servers if it weren't for the fact I'd be dealing with griefing problems every 30 seconds... I know man! it's frustrating!

All my neighbors have locks on their doors, so I can't just go into their houses whenever I want! The nerve of SOME people! How _dare_ they lock their stuff up. They are sooooo selfish.

An expectation of privacy is pretty much shared by most people in the world. Even people who live in really nice places in the country where they _don't_ lock their doors normally, will still react badly to complete strangers showing up unannounced.

There's an easy fix, you can create and host a world and let everyone else in! You can be the agent of change, and build bridges.

i agree. you shouldnt have to whitelist the world to play online with people... especially considering, whitelisting more often than not is bs. i think it would be easier to give admins more power to kick/ban malicious players. or some kind of detection system for extreme amounts of damage to the world or structures, that couldnt possibly be ingame enemies.

Yes. I think a fix for the wards would be to be able to set access permissions so players can't even enter the area protected by the ward. That way, you can secure an entire land mass with wards so you and your friends have a safe place but no one outside of your permission list would even be able to step foot on the same landmass.

I just can't help but think that the only people upset that doors have locks on them are those that want to take or destroy whatever is behind those doors. There's a reason why locks exist.

This is a game you play with friends, not one you play with randoms. If you want to play with randoms and make new friends, this is not the game for that.

I do agree the wards are 100% useless. If someone wants to grief you, there's nothing a ward is going to do to stop them.
