Wave damage in a boat

I been exploring via ship. I notice in stormy weather I keep taking wave damage. Instead of going with the flow of water. Like the wave drops so fast that the ship takes damage. Few times I thought I hit rocks or shallow areas. I got in a few places including ocean. I notice it happens when the sail gets max speed but the waves are moving in a different direction. Once felt like the wave disappeared and ship bounced on top of the water.

I understand hitting rocks. Since I was in deep ocean when it happens. Any rocks in my shipping lane, I clear out just for that reason. Second seed been finding tons of rock in water. What others have posted, it is wave angle or lag which is causing it.

That's silly. the Longboat is better in about all aspects of the game. It's also a lot faster which is reason alone to ditch the karve.

You shouldn't need to use small rivers anyways, just sail around the island or build your base near the open waters.

Sticking to the karve is handicapping yourself big time.

The one major advantage of the karve I find is that it's easy to break down and carry through a portal. To break it down, stand at the mast and hit it with an ax until it breaks. If you are standing on the mast (and have room in your inventory), all of the components will go directly into your inventory without touching the water. So I keep a box at my longboat dock labeled 'Karve' with the exact materials needed to build one. Take it out of the box, carry it through a portal or to a friend's world, and then break it down and put it back when I'm done.

Ship damage (when not the result of hitting rocks) in my experience, is gradual over time regardless of the weather or wave action. It is almost like it is timed to happen every 10 or 15 minutes. My longship takes 10 damage regularly whether I am in stormy or calm seas. It does damage when travelling at a high speed when there are large waves & rough seas waves, when the ship goes somewhat vertical getting air between it and the water, but apparently that type of damage can not trigger more than once every couple of seconds.

I only ever sail the longship. It is definitely the most stable vessel, it is easier to handle and can take a lot more damage. I always make sure to moor it in shallow water, if I am going to break it down, or if there is a chance for it to be destroyed by enemies. Sometimes I will moor it in deeper water off a small island, well away from shore, but generally I will always find shallow water. Now that loot and items float, losing parts in deeper water is not an issue.

Gradual, over time damage isn't supposed to happen. You may be hitting deeply submerged rocks that you can't see but are just tall enough to scrape the bottom of your ship. This has happened to me a few times, especially if I'm near very tiny bits of land on the edges of the ocean biome, but otherwise there's no type of gradual decay for the boats.

If you're not sailing the longship, you should. Not only does it handle the storms much better, it can take a huge amount of abuse.

Make landing somewhere (even a lone rock sticking up will work). build a workbench, repair the damage, dismantle the workbench, and then sail on.

This happens when you play on a hosted server. The delay in ping causes your boat to fall periodically, and it is collision damage against a surface from falling. This one cannot be corrected, it is a Peer-to-peer (P2P) limitation in the game.

If you are playing on a private game, where you are the host and this happens, then you might need to tune your graphics settings to reduce latency and increase performance.

You take damage if you drop down from a wave only, so as long as you move diagonal on the waves or move with the waves you wont take any damage.

If for some reason you need to go against the wave current/dirrecton, you need to slow down in order to not take damage.

Still working on iron for the long ship. I never noticed it on my first game but my second game, I noticed it a lot more. Using karve.

It's the rocks. When it's stormy your boat sinks deeper than normal between the big waves.

I'm just the opposite. I don't care about turn radius. I just want it to go where I tell it, and I find the karve way too squirrely, and almost unsailable in a strong storm.

It's also a battle tank there's only been a few times that I've felt like I had to stop to repair the ship, even after major storms, multiple sea monster attacks, daugr banging on, etc.

The only time I can think of that I had one close to sinking was when I thought I could reach a continent from a portal that I have at the bottom end of the world, and couldn't find a passage through Ashlands.

Long story short, I didn't bring any wood to even build a crafting table with, and had to abandon it when I ran out of the meager food supplies that I brought, with the ship about to sink. Luckily I eventually found a land bridge to a black forest (I think) where I was able to get some wood.

I'm not even sure I went back for it. I seem to remember one of my bases being closer than the ship.

Oh, and you can carry mats for a karve on a longship if you want to go riverboating. :-)
