Day/night cycle discussion questions
I love this game, it is the most fun I've had in a survival game, but I am curious of your opinions. There are so many survival games that have shortened day/night cycles, some games bordering on ridiculous. I get why it's done this way, although I don't agree. Valheim is not as annoying as some in this regard, and I can certainly live with it, but It always seems like as soon as I get a good flow going, it's dark and I can't see. (Not normally a cheater, but here, I use the 'tod' command often heh.)
Which brings me to my questions:
1)Would it be practical or interesting from your perspective to have longer (even as much as 'normal' 24 hour) day/night cycles, or maybe an option for it? Why?
THE BEES ARE HAPPY

I think the day-night cycle and many other things should be adjustable by players. Maybe the release version will have a settings panel for the game as such.

If anything they should make the entire day longer. Make 24 hours take an hour to pass.
I always feel like the night lasts longer than the day, but the opposite is true.

I cringe when I read a post where cheaters try to explain their reason for cheating.

If this means that a deconnection wouldn't equate with a sleeping night anymore, I agree. Perhaps another factor comes into play, however. I am also all for having it cycle offset from the human wall clock.
People who can play only 10 minutes a day would then spend two game sessions at day for every game session at night. Seems okay for me.

sleep at knight or buy the head pice from the trader and have a torch on ya head.
the cycles are fine as they are
and night time spawns stronger monsters which drop more stuff .

But if you think about 'real life' day lasts roughly 16 hours and 8 hours for night/sleep time. Which adheres to the 66/33% split. Don't get me started on my 75/25 sleep cycles >.> That would move the day/night ration to 75/25% from it's current 66/33.
I sure as heck wouldn't be able to maintain a 75/25 cycle if I was as active as my Valheim character.

That's not a great argument, what about the people who can only play for 25mins a day? or those that can only play 45mins a day? Or those very poor souls that can only play 10mins a day? I am also all for having it cycle offset from the human wall clock. Some people may play, say for 1/2 an hour right after work/school. If they always pop in at 5:00 and stop at 5:30, their day/night cycle is the same each session, and if you lengthen it, they may miss some daylight or night and be unable to experience a mix of day/night. If the cycle is offset a bit, say 45 min cycles, they get a mix from day to day. The longer the cycle, the more this is needed.

I personally like both the day and the night longer. Feels a bit more natural and less gamey to me.

You get a max of 25 minutes of rested, and you can sleep through the night. I don't see any point in changing the 30 minute day.

I am a little torn on that. Your best hunting is often at night; wraiths only out at night, glowing plants easier to find like thistle, sea serpent, etc. Very short nights would make that a pain.
If they make both night and day longer, that would work for me, or if they just increased day by 50% maybe, that would also work for me. Just don't make night any shorter than it is now.

Initially I thought the night cycle was way too long, but once (if?) you get the stage of wanting to hunt night creatures, you'll find it feels about right at 10 minutes.
Now I think that the day cycle should be lengthened, though. It's 20 minutes I believe, it should probably be more like 30. That would move the day/night ration to 75/25% from it's current 66/33.

Personally I'd leave it as it is. Sometimes I think it isn't long enough, other times I think it lasts too long. Just depends on what my goals are or I'm doing at the moment. Same with the other weather conditions.

I do agree that timescale is often something survival games get wrong, which often drives the argument that they're tedious among those who aren't fans of the genre. These games should embrace longer days and nights so players have some time to get immersed into the game and forget that the more dangerous night time is suddenly on them, or in other instances forget about things like their hunger and thirst or vitamins or other things which need managing.
When these things are constantly drawing the players attention, there's no chances of it becoming a genuine threat to their survival and instead really does just become a tedious bit of management which will only attract a niche playerbase.
