Same 3 base base pieces constantly break when I return from exploring.

Hi. So in my solo playthrough (no server, no mods) where I made my main base closer to moder but still in meadows. Moat, single bridge with closed gate, perimeter wall, stone building with another closed door, several workbenches around outside wall and around building (to prevent spawns). Whenever I come back from exploring the same 2 chests and one sign are destroyed and their contents all over the floor. Nothing else destroyed or damaged. Those 2 chests are placed in "wooden rack" directly connected to stone floor (chests are placed 1 piece away from blue colored wood). Stone floor is directly connected to terrain. From all the same racks dedicated to each biome this one gets destroyed and no mobs around. Happened earlier in playthrough then stopped but problem returned and it happens every time I come back from exploring. What could cause this? I'm tired of constantly repairing this and it kills my immersion knowing whenever I come back home it will need another repair. I tried to google the problem but nothing.

You are right for the second assertion: stacks can be seen as furnitures indeed, to make a workshop look like a workshop.

But for your first assertion, you didn't try hard enough. Stacks can be dropped inside one another if the ground and/or the line of sight are okay. You can even drop stacks of different materials at roughly the same place. I don't know if it is the most efficient way to store raw resources, but it is certainly not way behind a 8-slot chest.

Cherry on the cake, in case this storage is out of a base and is attacked (foraging camp), a chest and nearby workbench are rather fragile, whereas several piles inside each other cause spreading of damage. I use to drop stone piles at the foot of my palissades to strengthen them, for instance (when I don't need stone).

Happens whenever I port into base or walk back by foot. It is propably some weird bug with order of objects spawning back so they can render. Most likely those chests and sign spawning before their support and they collapse. Unless I figure out how to change this order I have to just accept it will happen. I tried rebuilding the whole storage rack with no effect.

Exploits aside, my comment stands.

Also, chests have more than 8 slots. To be fair, I was thinking 12 slots, myself, but the default chests have exactly 10. See https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Chest

The only reason to make stacks is if you like the way they look... in which case you're not using those materials in the first place (or you already did, depending on your perspective).

I have a sconce on an angled beam outside on my wharf that consistently becomes destroyed no matter how many times I rebuild it; I removed it eventually. Put a bench underneath it, did all sort of observations....could not figure it out?? I thought perhaps it's a swimming GD and it's tossing rocks at it? got a wall in front as well, tried all sorts of everything to no avail.

Normal chests can carry more than black metal in "space taken," actually. You can fit roughly six in the area it would take to place a black metal chest, if you squeeze them all together.
Yeah, you can squish 4 regular chests into mostly the same area as a single black metal chest but I really don't like having to open 4 chests to find what I'm looking for. I just slap down a black metal chest and a sign over it that says what it holds.

If you need more than 1 black metal chest for each item in game you are a hoarder any way. Except for the trophies its easy to get more stuff, just a bit time consuming if you don't plan ahead.

I mean, you can do the same with regular chests, too. I typically have a whole section dedicated to items like the various woods and stone, and pop a sign over each section instead of over each chest.

Then again, I play with mods that allow me to craft from chests and allow me to auto-store items in chests, and would probably organize quite differently if I didn't use those. (FOr example, instead of storing wood, stone, marble, etc., I'd just make stacks.)

I also tend to very much be a hoarder, but that's because I'm making storage areas for 3-8 people typically.

Can you supply a screenshot? What you describe sounds fine, however there are some draw order issues in the game which can cause unexpected disassembly, or pets to escape etc. These are especially prevalent if you use "fly", but I do not think you are doing that.

Destruction happens whenever I travel via portal or by foot away and back to base. No console commands.

I have to add I noticed strange behaviour of parts around these destroyed chests. When I rebuild them for a moment there were parts more than 1 block away from blue foundation parts and they were also marked blue. After few seconds they turn green. Tried to rebuild them too with no effect. Could be the draw order you mentioned.

I had the same happen in my base for a while, 2 signs and a lantern next to each other. Maybe you can find the old thread. A poster theorized that it was because your items are exactly at the limit of a "block" when the game renders the world, and when it renders your items it hasn't rendered their support yet so they break.

I dont know if it was really the reason. I ended up moving my things very slightly- like not even 1 in-game meter - and it stopped happening.

:steamthis: It's probably related to load order, and also quite possibly related to chunk borders; in fact, it seems logical to assume it's the interaction between those two things.

Try adding a separate support beam to the affected parts, or moving your storage entirely.

Thanks all for suggestions. Seems like this load order might be what is the problem here. I'll try it next game session.
