Of course they can. The game is still in early access and there's no promise that your 'beta version' world will be compatible with the finished game, nor any future patches during early access. The developers have attempted to maintain compatibility as a form of courtesy, but eventually you will need to give up on your old world.

Oh god not this answer......so cliche. How about, 90% of everyone who will ever buy this game has already done so, and it would be increadibly stupid to do this to their playerbase.

i was on the test server and I was a little confused myself. This isn't a biome. What the heck did they just do to the game... what am i looking at here. It is not a biome - its just rocks sticking out of the water like you said there is no place to fight. I completely do not understand what the hell this is..

is this a joke? Are the devs screwing with us? What the heck is this? The one thing this is not, is a biome. I went to about 10 different mistland areas and they were all tiny rocks sticking out of the water... not going to talk about enemies and what not in case anyone wants to check out that part themselves, but you will be scratching your head.

This is no biome folks. This is the devs idea of 9 months of work i don't know what to say. Except I hate it. I don't even think they tested the gameplay here...whatever it is it does not look fun or appealing to even search out another mistlands area. it's not interesting area to visit. Not even a little bit. I think the devs spent about 3 months on this tops.

i was expecting something not like this, with massive hills that are a pain to navigate. maybe forests and other things. i thought it was because i had already explored the mistlands prior to the update but it filled out and is tedious to explore.

You're suppose to generate a new world, honestly. They said in patch notes that they've changed world gen to create larger patches of Mistlands and not just tiny sections that a lot of you are currently running into.

i don't feel this is accurate, it is rock and watery but youll find your way. i just had to test this out myself, and i can i assure you they might adjust it a bit but this seems as it should be.

To be more direct, there definately is land for sure sure in my prior world.

It's basically unplayable. A bunch of rocks jutting straight out of the ocean. Swim 50 feet and drown and that's if you're not under attack by 20 things. I've loved every expansion up to Mistlands but this sucks.

If this is staying true to previous progression, the difficulty should ramp up quite a LOT and Plains gear only JUST being able to protect a small bit until new resources / recipes / crafted items get unlocked and upgraded.

Ok, I tested this myself because I couldn't find any information elsewhere on this but it APPEARS THAT:

If you're using an OLD world and heading out to find mistlands in unexplored area, which is what the devs said to do; YOU WILL get Mistlands, but with the caveat that the Mistlands you -DO- get are very broken, small islands, hard to navigate and pretty much unplayable.

I generated the same seed after the mistlands patch and the mistlands I went to were completely different, actual land masses and navigatable terrain. It seems like currently you need to generate a NEW seed to play this biome.

tldr: yes, you'll get it in old seeds in unexplored biomes, but it'll be broken and hard to play. You need to generate a new seed to get the intended experience.

The gear simply doesnt matter. No gear in the world will help you in waterworld.

resets are part and parcel of early access titles.

persisting with older version worlds, (not unreasonable considering time invested) is a choice, but that's gonna come with consequences as you've discovered.
