Facing Yagulth, fully geared and upgraded, best food, Rest timer of 20 minutes... enter the area... OK... his arena area in my seed is closely ringed by two tar pits. Clear them out in preparation for the battle.
Get rested again quickly... replenish food and fire potions... about 10 minutes since clearing tar... start engaging him... everything going well... only 5 minutes in... suddenly get swamped by 5 growths spitting black tar... can't move dead. Uninstall. Over 300 hrs.. .not worth the frustration anymore. :(

The very best thing to do first... plaster the area with Campfires. Use a Workbench as a guide where to put them. Most player build items in Valheim "paint" a "Player Base" area around them, 15 meter.
The problem is, that they all count as a target for monsters... the only two not counting as targets are the Campfire and the Bonfire. They both have a 15 meter Player Base they paint around them which prevents monster spawn.
Campfires and Bonfires have a 20-meter range, not 15, so far as I can tell.
For those Tar Pits... Surround them with Campfires... or drain them. Either fill them up, or dig a hole next to them, open the trench to the tar Pit and the tar runs out. That prevents those nasty Tar Slimes from annoying you.
That doesn't stop Growths from respawning. Only Player Base structures can stop that.
For melee the best weapon is the Frostner. Since he takes nearly no damage from Pierce(high resistance) and reduced from Blunt and Slash... the Frostner with its massive Frost damage deals good damage.
If you want to shoot him, get Ice Arrows. You won't do a ton Pierce... but Frost as said is good. He used to be vulnerable against those Silver Arrows... not anymore it seems.
Yagluth does have very high Pierce resistance, but he has absolutely no resistances to either Blunt or Slash. As for Spirit, he does take Spirit damage but he doesn't take extra damage from Spirit attacks. Also, Spirit arrows only do 20 Spirit damage while Frost Arrows do 52 damage, making them a better choice.
As for the "best" weapon against Yagluth, it's the Silver Sword, without question. The only particular issue with that sword is it's insane cost to make and upgrade, requiring 160 Silver to reach Level 4. That being said, Frostner itself also requires 120 Silver and also requires Ymir Flesh to make, which might be an issue if the Merchant proves to be elusive.

can't they... get destroyed? uhm, why not to prevent growth spawning by placing workbench nearby pits or digging in a totem?

That's what I'm trying now... I've actually been able to kite him in to a swamp where he's entangled with some indestructible trees. Next step is I'm going to dig a big pit and see if I can't harpoon him in to it.
The swamp is actually very close to a portal so short of him getting loose and agroing on the rest spot I've got a nice place to work from.
In this playthrough I've been trying to play it through without using any environmental exploits but the current environment is calling for it... Fighting fire with fire. If he wants to exploit tar pits then he's going in the hole and getting Smith slapped. :)
I think you should now spawn Bonemass and let the 2 fight it out.

So pull your your Hammer, select a Workbench, check the dotted line they project... and switch to Campfire place it down. The next Campfire should be placed so it a Workbnench was placed instead the dotted line gets close to the other Campfires around it.
This prevents any and all monster spawn, be it raids, night spawns or normal spawns.

As for Yagluth... he is one tough mother. Ideally you want to do some terraforming. Either some pit where he can get stuck, or some walls you can kite him around. Interestingly the fire he spews and the meteors can't destroy trees... but the aoe he does can. I tried to kill him 2 times now, the first time without using any "trick".

Yes. However, enemies don't target campfires, which can serve the same purpose.

Why engage him in a risky spot, much less tar pits? I mean you can do the brute force Dark Souls approach for the challenge but you're making the game harder than it is.
Just move AWAY from the tar pits and kill him. And keep your shield in block mode.
And if really want to play it safe, move him to a spot that you know is completely safe and has your portal close by (e.g. on a big rock you can jump to or over a pit or whatever) by so you rest, recharge whatever god power you want, return and beat him whenever you feel like it.

Reinstalled to try...Cleared 2 pits... installed workbench and campfire to try to stop spawn... reset all my food and rest to start engagement with Yagulth... started engagement...
Went over a small hill to do a quick heal while pelting him with arrows... suddenly tar'd, can't move.. there is a third pit in proximity hidden at the bottom of the hill. On top of that get pounced on by a group of 3 Loxs, two Deathsquito's and a patrol of 4 Fulings while trying to sludge away... re-uninstall.
At that point in the game I'd already built and upgraded everything I could.. .multiple fortresses... I got my money's worth. Just no luck... my blood pressure is high enough as it is. On to other things.

Lol, I tried to make almost the same post a while back. For me, it was the new and improved astro-lox's that spawned in. The fight is either too long for solo players and things spawn back in and get you or they need to somehow minimize the spawn points around the alters...something. People here will say git gud or some such bs like you don't know what your doing, like you just stumbled on to the last boss, lol. Need's something balanced for solo players, but I won't be giving up on this game anytime soon. Worst part was the death run into all those beasts and Yags!
