That's why you should keep your bees happy. They get grumpy when disturbed by unwanted guests.

its an aoe poison that does minor damage. I don't think it stacks. One or two hives can kill normal grey dwarves. Anything tougher and the hives get smashed before the bad guy dies, 100 in a line might eventually wear down something like a wolf.

I have a torch placed in the middle of 5-6 surrounding nests. This way, the nests may be attacked but never overwhelmed.
