In an interview conducted over the official Valheim Discord, a developer was asked the question:
"With the massive support Iron Gate has received with Valheim, are there any other game titles you all will be working on after the full release, or will you instead dedicate your team to possible updates post-launch such as DLC?"
The developer answered:
"With the massive support we have gotten, it's important for us to stay focused and deliver a good game. After "real" launch we plan to keep updating Valheim with content. Also, all DLCs will always be free. We don't believe in paying for DLCs. Locking content from players behind moneywalls, WTF... It is pretty stupid and greedy."
The interviewer didn't specifically name which developer they spoke with, but I know that Grimmcore has also stated that all DLCs in the future, if there are any, will be free. Hope this helps! Skål!

Not something IG can even think about until v1.0 has been out for like a year.
You are joking right? The amount of games I have seen on this platform in early access that release DLC while still in early access is frightening. And then the games that exit early access to 1.0 having paid dlc within a day. There are no hard fast rules for how they will release. Thinking they HAVE to wait a year is just naive.

One of the developers told us on Discord unambiguously that they are not going to release any paid DLCs for this game.
Now plans can always change, but its safe to assume that no paid DLCs are planned for the foreseeable future. Also like others said, the updates to the main game will of course be free of charge.

It depends on what you mean by DLC.
They have stated they will complete the game and anyone who has bought it now will have the full game. Any updates are free. Some people consider updates as downloaded content... DLC in that regard is free.
Once the game is "done" I would expect some cosmetic DLC for people who want to support the devs. The way they have done things so far I wouldn't expect to be charged for any game changing content.
thanks for the answers everyone.
I am really considering getting this game but i don't want to be in a scenario where buy i the game in early access then when it is completed they start selling a ton of paid dlc for game content.
Because many games have become like that these days. Just constantly milking people for money.
if I buy the game now and will have the full game thats great. Just didn't want to buy it now then see them release like 3 or 4 dlc for more in game content that i have to pay extra for.

Yeah no, its not going to be like that. The situation is such that 3 big updates are currently planned, each of which will introduce a new end-game biome. The first one, Mistlands, will drop later this year, possibly in a few months time if everything goes well. Additionally a content update is planned for the Ocean biome at some point. After these patches the game is "finished". They may add more things afterwards, but again no paid content is planned. if I buy the game now and will have the full game thats great. Just didn't want to buy it now then see them release like 3 or 4 dlc for more in game content that i have to pay extra for.

This isn't Destiny 2 or Monster Hunter... that kind of endless milking and paid power creep is just crazy!

At least those games are "finished". I hate it when I get a notice about something hitting 1.0 and getting "full release" and there's already a half-dozen DLC expansions you can buy.
I get developer support ones with cosmetics that are purely for fun and to support the devs, like Grim Dawn does. Actual expansions with new areas when you're not even out of EA is just greed.

so you would rather have no new content than a few paid dlcs that are optional?

The answer is undoubtedly. "Yes". As no one has any information on DLC what so ever. There might not even be DLC.
