Animals.. first time with this.. kind of a chore lol WAY too basic.

I mean.. have these guys played ARK? why are my Lox always destroying my base when there is something 30m away that they can;t even see behind a wall? How about the ability to put them on passive, aggressive, neutral. Turn mating on/off. Follow mode. Patrol mode..

feeding troughs?? anyone ever heard of them? Lets just throw seeds and food on the ground.. so then all my friends can accidentally pick it up every 10 minutes. cool game-play experience lol. I hope they put a smidge more effort into this abysmal system.

raised terrain cannot be damaged by a lox. A wall of it around your home makes your home near invulnerable. A wall of it around your lox keeps them out of trouble. I recommend let them run free and stomp everything while your base hides behind the dirt wall, but either way works.

I made a plains base and put an earthen wall around it. Then I made an earth wall pen and left a lox width gap in the wall. The gap was in the workbench radius of the lodge's earthen wall and so was protected from damage. I built a set of wooden steps up to the wall from inside the pen (on the opposite side from the gap) and put some cloudberries at the foot of the steps. Then I went outside to the closest lox spawn point and got the attention of all 3 lox that were there and had them chase me back to the gap in the wall and all the way across the pen to the wooden stairs. I climbed the stairs and got on top of the earthen wall and their first attempt at attacking me broke the stairs so they couldn't get out of the pen.

I then ran along the earth wall to the opening and used my hoe to fill it in. 3 trapped lox and nothing they could damage left inside then pen. I tamed them and then built earthen stairs inside their pen so I can get in and out to feed them and a wooden ladder on the other side of the eathen wall so I can climb up from the lodge side to get to the earth stairs.

Then I placed workbenches along the inside of the earthen wall pen so that stuff can't spawn inside the pen. Sometimes deathsquitos will get in by flying over the walls and the lox kill them and break the workbenches so I have to make sure my work bench coverage is till 100% before I leave.

Yeah it's such a simple system. And yet, they leave this open and let it be super clunky and unfinished like a lot of parts in this games. They start something, but never seem to really finish it.

And it's astounding to me to what degree some people here go to build around this clunky stuff and say it's "realistic".
But i'm also astounded that trenches in this forum don't apply as cheesing the game, while mods do, so why am i surprised xD.

They are livestock, not robots. Sounds like you want robots.

Wolves are not Lifestock, they should defend you. Not running wild, destroying youre base, mating like rabbits and lagging youre game out, while destroying your ears with their howling every few seconds.

When wolves where this way in RL, we rather would eat dogmeat today or had nothing in any form of dogs because of the annoyance.

The subject was Lox, not wolves. A well trained dog might behave in the way you described (you would have to spay or neuter them to keep them from breeding) to expect a barely tamed wolf to is a little much.

"Not running wild, destroying youre base, mating like rabbits and lagging youre game out, while destroying your ears with their howling every few seconds."

Minus the lagging this sounds like a pretty good description of dog ownership to me.

And? What hinders to take this to other animals too?

And when you have a dog who is like the description from me, you shouldn't have a Dog, because this is dangerous not only to others but also to you and youre Dog. I hope you at least have a good insurance.

A dog, off a lead, will chase a rabbit just about every time, that is just in a dog's nature. You want a dog to be like a robot, only doing what you want when you want it to.

Perhaps you should use a different approach to wolves.
Having them running around is no problem.
Having them killing things is no problem either, as that's the reason most people tame and breed them in the first place.
Destroying your base? I haven't seen the wolves I have tamed doing that.
Breeding like rabbits? Well, you can start by removing the meat from what they killed.
No meat, no breeding. Nor will they breed when you keep sticking arround. So either remove the meat or move somewhere else once in a while and they won't breed at all.
Which also solves the lagging you seem to have to deal with.
As for the howling, only the cubs howl. Which can be countered by making sure the wolves can't breed. Which can be done by removing the meat or moving elsewhere.

I've bred a wolf-army to deal with Yagluth and yes, the cub howling can be annoying. I solved that by making sure I was at my base and do something else until some days had passed and the howling stopped. At that point I just dropped in some more meat at the breeding pens and went afk again.
It's as simple as that.

Dry moats and earthen ramparts were used by the Vikings for defense. They are historically accurate. That's why most people don't consider it cheesing the game.

ark and valhiem are just different games, i imagine if they started adding these things wildcard would be giving them a call. besides i just quit ark after over 6000 hours, anything that reminds me of that game would just give me PTSD.

Why not keeping them outside your base?

I'm aware there may be mistland creatures able to kill them, however, a pack of Lox is quite strong enough to deal with lots of problems.

I've seen my 5 Lox attack and kill most of the wolves during a "you are hunted" event I experienced at the plains.

The only Lox which seem to move back to the place they spawn were the two parents I tamed to start with. After removing those two, their off spring didn't move far from my base, making it a lot easier for me to build a plains base without defences.

So perhaps it's a better idea to leave them free roaming as some sort of mobile defense instead of locking them up and being forced to repair their damage once every X days.

I don't know, lox breeding reminds me a lot of real life pet ownership. They go where they're not supposed to. They eat off the floor. Chase everything that moves whether you want them to or not. Generally make a mess.

You keep them inside your base? Very brave. Or...that other thing...

I build them a pit.. and lined the top of it with a row of stone walls.. they like to stomp and do damage to that 2 or 3 times a day as my friends the graylings wander over to investigate my island... unrelenting little pricks.

The damage they do tot he wall is negligible.. regardless I should be able to tell them to chill the d out.. they are "tamed" right.. which means I have some kind of control.. or should.

Yep. I dug a trench around a section of meadows, and even though they're not supposed to, they kept ending up in the ditch, and stuck almost sideways because they didn't quite fit. I stood there and watched as they pushed each other in on two different sides of the field. I gave up and made ramps so they can get themselves out, on the inside. They seem to prefer it down there. Then I put stakewalls around the outside to block their view out, and to block other mob's view in. Did have to replace a section.

But I'm not holding my breath on getting better controls any time soon. Animal taming is an afterthought in this game, about like fishing, and we're lucky we have saddles. Ark is straight up an animal taming game from the start, so naturally they have better controls.
