Way to much loss of skills when you die . . .
I dont know exactly how much your supposed to lose when you die but this is just stupid. I heard a few different things but most common seems to be people saying 5% of your skill level is lost when you die . . . which isnt true. Ive lost from one level up to 5 or 6 even at low levels of the skills. going from level 20 in a skill to level 19 when you die, sure it sucks but i can live with that but going from level 20 to 15 . . . wtf its so easy to die especially at night it doesnt even seem like its worth trying to level any of the skills when such a random number can be taken away just for dieing. with such a penalty for death it makes it rather boring and frustrating to have to relevel skills over and over again. I know i know , if i dont die i wont lost the skills but why make it or leave it the way it is, this is a great game and i really enjoy it but this just turns me off at times. one more thing, enemies that can swim forever and never drown, YAY! lol. Apologies for ranting i just hope something gets done to make it better in the future.

These people that said that do not really matters the skills, are clearly blind
50% of damage on your main weapon is a real huge buff
50% of damage and draw speed makes ur simple bow into a semi auto partisan rifle
50% of damage absorion from parry/blocking makes u survive against 2* goblin lancers easily
Tips to not die often : use silver to padded armor all the time and get eaten with mid game to late game food when u are out of your base ( turnip soup , carrot soup , serpent soup, sausages , lox meat pie , fish wraps and blood puddin ) , use bonemass power when the deal gets harder

It's great having some plenty for dying. Really took the excitement out of mmo's when they started removing corpse runs and level loss. It's what really gets the blood pumping when things start going bad.

It makes the game , the higher your level the higher the price when you die , Don `t die .
If i was a right muppet running in hack chop not really trying and getting killed all the time and there was no penalty i would get bored , there wouldn t be that extra challenge and i would just not coming back to this game , as it happens the game has so many extra bits to make a challenge i really enjoy it

I don’t even pay attention to the skills. They are meaningless unless you purposely think about them.

They isn't entirely true. Skills actually grant incredible bonuses. You can see what each stat actually affects in game by hovering over them in the menu.

You shouldn't be dying much. Valheim rewards caution and preparation, death is easily avoidable. Your mentality at all times should be to treat the game like Permadeath.
I've died 3 times in nearly 200 hours, all by doing something reckless that could of been easily avoided.
Skill loss is the only real punishment for dying, as corpse runs hardly matter as shown by countless players who will die 20 times in a row trying to get their gear back because they don't realize skill loss is a thing. It's also easy enough to set up a travel portal anywhere you go further trivializing corpse runs.

I have to disagree with the OP. When I first started playing I was reckless and died alot. I mean a lot. I am on my 3rd start over and now I don't die as much and the few times I did I deserved it (so far). My skills are looking good and the penalty forced me to get better at the game. I prepare properly and learned how to fight and parry like a warrior should. I will agree that losing 2-5 skill levels does suck but if they got rid of it dying would not matter at all. Yes I know you still have to do a CR but seriously that is usually not a problem. I played Everquest for a long time and maybe this is why I like this game as both are very grindy with corpse runs and in EQ instead of skills you lost xp on death. Meanwhile I also played City of Heroes and death is a joke with a debt system that you could make up in a matter of minutes. YMMV.

Maybe if we could customize for more or less challenge would be nice.

Stay on top of your max health, I have yet to get my average skill level above 40 because I constantly die from silly mistakes.
The biggest culprit is falling to my death because I feel safe in my zone and I forget to eat or casually run off a roof and die, the death penalty is steep at 80+ when it takes a hour to gain 1 level but it also teaches you not to make the same silly mistakes again, however some of us have given up achieving max skill levels since it can be console commanded and no achievement's to show for it

It's a 5% loss.
5% loss of a skill at 20 is a different loss than a skill at 100, because math.
I hope nothing is done about it. The penalty for death is part of what creates tension in the game.

It's also just really not that bad. And getting your body back is typically only difficult at all if you got incredibly careless and your body is somehow surrounded. But at that point you deserve it lol

Hugin warns you about night being more dangerous and even tells you about sleeping through it. Running around at night is pretty much asking to be killed.

I haven't even noticed much a real difference having levelled up skills, there are no traits locked to a certain level or anything so it doesn't really matter.
