Building in ruined buildings?
Hi,
I have read people saying they use ruined building for shelter. Can you actually add floor, walls etc. to old buildings? Or do you just demolish them and build on the flat ground.
Totally new player here, so thanks for help.

Main thing is being careful since alignment can become off very easily. Sometimes its fine but the rock + wood can potentially break stability if its wrong in a specific way.

It really is a pic of Mark Blankfield in character- I saw the movie when it came out. Quite the hoot with its blending of the original tale and 'modern' society.

You can build in them sure. Once you have a workbench you can build wooden items and they'll snap just fine.
Some of them are too small to really be useful but you can totally do it if you want to :) Also, the stone ones in the black forest can be nice for a little rest stop. I usually slap a workbench and a camp fire in them when I find them to keep my rested up.

Yea you can. Sometimes you can find whole villages in meadows...though conquest may be necessary... ;)

And the villages @xx mentions actually have a workable layout and with a bit of repair and addition can turn into nice multi building player homesteads.

You can find ruined keeps in the mountains, and I personally repurposed one into my castle's entryway. It can save you time and effort on mining stone, but keep a bundle of arrows handy for dealing with drakes.

Like others have said they are easily repaired and remodeled. My favorite ones are those with vines growing on them which are not a growable or craftable item. Gives a more authentic look. Watch out though since the vines can be destroyed.

the smaller building in the center was a found building:

this was my very first base, that evolved from a small hut i hid in on my very first night. took me like a week in game to figure out why i kept getting poisoned whenever i went to the back of the hut.
it was the bees...

I find the old stone buildings/towers in the swamp very useful to setup a small base of operations. Swamp is a pain to build in and for me at least, not enjoyable. So those old crumbly towers work great. Once you have some iron you can repair the stone. I just throw up some wood roofs and such as needed until I can properly repair it. They also can fit a portal, tight fit but it works. Then good to go. I usually sail my ore back to main base but once I used core wood & wood to build up and make a spot for a forge to make gear with since there were so many crypts nearby. The smelter was on an outside raised stone base (was on ground, smelted some iron, made the stone cutter, broke down and rebuilt).
And the various draugr villages make for quick outposts when traveling around.

I do this all the time, making mini-bases in the Black Florist, Swamps, Mountains and Plains. I build the stone back up as high as it will go and then build a wooden structure on top, usually cantilevered out so ti has a bigger footprint than the tower itself. Enough room for a comfortable place.

You can place a workbench and maybe stonecutting bench for stone blocks if you have iron.
After that you can repair damaged parts and add new ones to complete the repairs.

Stamina is the only thing used when repairing stuff. So it can be handy early on for a quick cheap shelter.

The first few days after I start a game I prefer to find a wreck of a building, set up a workbench and repair it for my initial shelter. Then, while looking around and gathering supplies, I look for an area to build a more permanent base.
