This has been discussed multiple times in various threads but you can :

1. Keep it unexplored(and remember that unexplored radius for the map fog is not the same as what the map considered rendered. There is a risk that any area you are skirting the edges of will have a bit farther in that will not render new content in the future.

2. Have multiple seeds and think of them as "portal worlds" This way you can be ready for mistlands with a new map you plan to explore then. etc. You can also clone the exact same seed you have now as a new map(just give it a new name) similarly.

Yes Ashlands has Surtlings, coal and flametal which has no use yet, but the biome is working last I checked. Good place to practice snipering IMO.
