All pick last forever, not sure what you are talking about. Once any tool is built it can infinitely be repaired.

Clearing an area, its faster to just have spare picks early game when they only last a few min between fixes. After you have upgraded the 2nd tier pick, they last long enough but the antler one is only good for like 2 big rocks.

You will want to fully quarry out copper deposits. Theres often alot more copper underground than just shows up on the surface. But even more important, is if you establish a mining camp and drag a cart about, while youll have a hell of a time transporting it and the copper back to camp, but you will have a good amount of stone to work with later.

The quarry areas make good troll traps too.

As hard as copper deposits. Which means by midgame you should be shattering chunks off with every blow provided you aren't dying constantly and having massive skill loss.
