an early access game "On sale" is a MAJOR red flag for me.

I was on the fence about buying this for myself and a friend around christmas but i'm not okay with the sale i'm seeing right now. It tells me that the developers are using the early access tag as an umbrella against cristism, and to boost daily ratings. This behavior has to stop.

This sale tells me two things.

1. This game was released as a finish product for-profit, NOT to support the devs in active development cycles in the usual beta environment.

2. The developers do not value their own time around this game, or have moved on to other projects and want to slowly milk this.

As contradictory as it sounds, the behavior of the masses to majority purchase "Early access" titles which are rarely ever finished; makes further work a non-value from a business standpoint. Think about it, Would you keep working AFTER you've been paid just cuz?

Been burned too many times and i know the signs. If we fast foward 5 years from now i'll be looking at the same game with minimal additions/fixes

Its a great game, worth every dollar, and could have easily launched it as a "full release" instead of early access.

OP does make a fair point though. It took them 7 months to give people a furniture patch and 4 more to show that they're working on biomes. Their roadmap is going to take a while to complete.

Tiny dev team sure, but they also sold 5 million copies of the game in one month.

If not because I liked making games and was encouraged to do so by people buying an early rendition of my game in mass, then I would keep working on it because my reputation as a game developer is at stake.

1. This game was released as a finish product for-profit

If so... so what? Players are clearly pleased with it. And everyone who purchased it did so with the understanding that the game and dev cycle is subject to change.

NOT to support the devs in active development cycles in the usual beta environment.

This doesn't follow. We'e already seen further development, so you're wrong here.

2. The developers do not value their own time around this game, or have moved on to other projects and want to slowly milk this.

What? Sales don't mean the value of the game has fallen and the devs don't value it or their time. The simplest explanation is marketing.

And we know by now that the devs don't like to reveal every minute detail of future updates. For some of us, this is awesome. They let the player explore what's updated instead of spelling it all out. Don't buy it if you don't like this kind of update.

I enjoy getting early access titles. There's a certain charm to helping shape a game with feedback as you watch it grow into something great. It also mean's I've had my share of burns though so I get why not everyone wants to risk it. I've gotten everything from the gems that were Subnautica and Die Young, to the finished yet disappointing to many The Forest, to the endless dev cycles of 7 Days to Die and Project Zomboid, and the apparent abandonment of Stay Alive Apocalypse, or the descent into aggressively microtransaction fueled p2w that was Crossout...to name a few that stand out.

That said, Valheim already has a good amount of fairly well polished content that would already be worth the price for many even if it never got updated again (although it actually just received a content update, even if it was a minor one). I've already got over 150 hours and haven't actually beaten the current content available. So I'd say it's already worth the price tag and I didn't even get it on sale. If you are going to take a risk, this is a pretty good one to risk so far. If not, you can always wishlist it and check back later when it's further in development just to be safe.

WOW just WOW. The game has so much content for an EA game. Even if it died today it would be worth the retail price. This game and all other EA games would be much better off without players like you. Did you think before you wrote thid post? or did u just get pee'd off because the game was to expensive for ya?

EA games that Rarely ever finish? I have had 1 that did not pan out and that was years ago. Some of my fav. games came from EA. Dood get a clue. your embarrassing yourself.

I'm sorry what?

First of all, I won't point out the irony of you misspelling 'criticism' in a post criticizing a game you obviously know little to nothing about.

Secondly, when you're done making posts like this take a look at the reviews for the game. Exactly what do they need to shield themselves from - they're actually one of the few devs that seem to be generally liked by the people who actually bothered to try the game (and for good reason IMO)...

Yeah, this is a total scam, absolutely scandalous! I got it on sale, too, back in spring and I only got - *checks statistics* - 358.4 hours of playing out of it. That's 358.4 hours having a blast building stuff and exploring stuff together with my brother-in-law on our dedicated server. Absolute rip-off, man.

The game is less than a movie on Blu Ray. If that is too much I don't think you should be buying any video games. I am approaching 400 hours. So it costs me 4 cents an hour to play. Wait, electricity to run my computer is more than that.

How many EA games haven't gone on sale? How can this be a red flag when pretty much EVERY early access game game has done the same thing? I can accept that some people will consider the very concept of EA to be a red flag, and view them all as scams - but this game is hardly unusual in reducing price now and then.

Water, go with your guts: $12 is too much to risk. 6,000,000 other people and I will certainly feel that your presence is missed as we continue to love this game for the decade to come. So sad...

The people working on this game believe in it. The millions of us playing everyday believe in them. It's simple really.
