When/If they add new biomes and the like do we need to start new servers?

Or does it update the current seed with the new content.

No its not, you can create a new world to explore that, even the same seed. Have a building seed and a new explore seed. Also building ability improves with time. So many posted buildings look good to the new but unfinished to the experienced. The true building masters will not care because new materials are now available and a new biome.

I understand that, in principle, all of us should be prepared to resign our progress up to now. What makes Valheim so different from other survival games - and frankly what has kept it relevant during the content drought - is the building mechanic. People spend weeks creating villages, towns, castles, etc... if mistlands requires a hard reset, the player base thats actually active with some frequency is gonna be left frustrated. That has to be shooting yourself on the foot, if you're iron gate.

So, if you wish to get the new content, as with every expansion, you need to re-roll your map. You might just create a new map with the same seed, so you already know the parts you explored.

That's what I did when the Ice Caves were released. But then I was just in Bronze Age and didn't really have much.
that's the main reason I stopped playing this. Shouldn't have to reset your progress because the game gets a big update. I don't know any other game that functions like that.

The entire map is generated when it's created. So if those features, items, monsters didn't exist they won't be there. It makes sense as it's not a server you're connecting to. All the data is stored on your PC and shared if you do multiplayer.

You didnt play much then , every game that have random generate seeds do this or worst , like 7 days to die where you have to full reset your game each Alpha patch

It's truly an unknown since the spawn area has to be changed as well. In the past, with things added (not biomes) there has been what people said, you have to have it un-seen through the fog of war and what not, be so many meters away, etc.

..however, this time, as I said, even the spawn area has to be changed so no one truly knows.

Take it with a grain of salt but, I have visited a new seed on my friend's server and spotted the Mistland, they are now completely empty (not more giant trees and spider webs) so there might be a chance the next update will add the Mistland biome on the empty space ? At least that's what I hope too, I was kinda just waiting for the Mistland update to fall before returning to Valheim.

The safest, most conservative thing to do is a new seed. Just think on it as a "portal world" since you can of course move back and forth between seeds. Many community servers do this because 1 map is not enough and have resource seeds that they wipe every few weeks for those needing to get resources while 1 or 2 are main building/town servers.

For ease you know you can also use the same seed with a different name(clone if you will) it'll be new though so you'd have to move stuff from your 1st version to the second version. Naming your seed is what makes the seed unique to your ecocide if you will :P

If you haven't fully explored your current seed and have been -----no where----- near mistlands biomes on your map, then it probably is safe to assume that the mistlands update will spawn everything intended for your specific seed.

However if you've skirted mistlands areas but not revealed them on the maps fogged out area, there is a high chance not all parts of the mistlands biomes will spawn. This is intentional by the devs to better ensure that it doesn't disrupt/break someone's seed if they've done anything on it.

So all in all, I personally recommend just having multiple seeds to best ensure no discrepancies of getting or not getting the mistlands on the map properly when the update goes out.

A dev a few weeks ago said that the turn around on major updates is between 6 to 9 months. Since icecaves came out a couple of months back, you're looking at a mistlands release corridor most likely between september and december respectively. I'd say look to december and be pleasantly surprised if its before that. Given that so far we're primarily been seeing still concept art and some small feature pieces(troll traps this week were shown) with ingame stuff, the december end of the spectrum seems more compelling.

I mean, not really that big of an issue if you consider that you can just take your character and go to a new world explore, raid and such then load back into your main world with all your loot

As an option in case like me, you don't want to start a new seed every major content drop and just want to keep your current seed... There is a mod called Upgrade_World that you can use to upgrade your current seed with the new things. I've used this twice now, once to add tar pits and once to add mountain caves. Can confirm it works very well!

Be sure to backup your world files before running the upgrade just in case something goes bad!

New here so take it with a grain of salt but from what I’ve read if you still have areas unexplored it will seed them with the new areas but if you got everything explored you need to start a new map.
