When exploring I find a large offshore rock. I 'anchor' swimming distance from that rock. I then swim to the rock, then from rock to shore. I mark my boat location on the map. To be safe I put a campfire on the shore closest to rock/boat. I also never make landfall in the swamp or plains biome.

For a base there are countless ways to dock your boat.

However you still have to be careful. Mobs will attack the chest and break it. Then the items on the ground are subject to despawn if there is no nearby workbench.

My advice is to bury a workbench near the chest. That way you will not lose the workbench or the items if mobs break the chest.

If the boat is sufficiently far from shore, it will be safe. I don't like the idea of storing a boat in the chest (can a boat really fit in a chest?) I like the challenge of finding a way to dock a boat and make it safe.

I have lost boats after mobs destroyed the nearby workbench. Since the workbench was gone then items were subject to normal despawn rules rather than no despawn within a workbench area. Hence why I said to bury the workbench.

This is correct.

The boat does not move (besides up and down) when no one is on the boat. You can even stand out of the boat and interact with the storage and the "full physics" of the water will not take place. It will not float away.

In bigger storms, the boat may hit bottom or rocks beneath it that can cause damage. Overall, I don't think I've ever had a boat destroyed from just sitting there. If anything, I've had boats destroyed because I didn't clear the area and some enemy came by and just whacked on it. So now I always build a wall around the boat when I want long term storage. I've never had a boat destroyed that was walled off.

Sure, you can destroy it and save the resources. Or you can have a cool looking boat sitting in a cool looking dock.

As long as its not overly shallow water its fine. Also if the chunk its in isn't loaded from a player being near nothing can happen to it as an area not loaded is paused till a player gets near (aside from stuff on timers).

Once you are established build a stone dock so the waves wont take it out to sea. but yes until then it will not float away but it will take storm damage and can be destroyed by monsters.

Yup, just smash it up close to shore so you can recover all the crafting materials and put them in a box. Make new boat when ready to sail again. I do this often although I also have two slips for boats when I am just dumping ore and leaving soon.

it slowly wears off, so i recommend you to take the boat to the shore, and axe it down. if the water's too deep nails are gonna sink btw
