Why build walls?

I'm playing solo, and I'm wondering if it is worth building walls. I mean, other than for fun? I did a quick Google search to see if we will ever be able to build traps, but all I found was fish traps.

As I see, as a solo player, you're better off with a house than a fort, because if your house gets attacked, you just step out of the door and explain the attacker that they should bother someone else. With a fort, if it is attacked, you step out, then run a bit to reach the gate of your fort, then maybe run a bit more because you have to circle around your walls to be able to explain the trespasser why they should get off your lawn. That takes more time, and that means more possible damage to your property.

If you could place traps, that could change the game in a big way. Then it would be worth building walls to force attackers into areas prepared for their visit.

What do you mean there are no traps? What about the wooden stakes? Have you never accidentally killed your newly tamed wolf because he walked too many times into a stake? Also, bee hives are surprisingly decent (for small raids) damage wise as they apply poison to anything that hits them.

Its pretty easy to run outside and aggro all the mobs during a raid before they do any significant damage. A wall is fun but unnecessary, even for trolls and drakes.

Well, thank you all for the answers. Apparently walls can be useful, but at this point I'm thinking a walled off garden (+ shed for storing stuff) and a standalone house might be a more viable option than a classic castle/fort.

In my solo game, I build medium sized house on the top of a hill, surrounded by a garden, a kitchen and my forge. I also got a dock down by the shore. I didn't put any walls, just some fence here and there for decoration purpose. Everything is quite simple, yet neat.

So far, I didn't get any trouble at all. If a raid happen, I go outside, if I am not already, and ennemies come at me to fight, so they leave my house alone. Even if they destroy something, because I didn't go to them quick enough or fight a bit too near of my installations, all the materials are on the ground, ready to be taken back once the raid is over. It take a couple of minutes to repair what have been destroyed after the raid.

I only needed to rebuild a bit one time after a raid (it took me less than 5 minutes). The other times, ennemies were after me so I could easily attract them away from my installations.

They could be useful if you're more into the building aspect and make a big house, with multiples levels and fancy design that takes you hours and hours to put down and you want to take extra care to prevent ennemies to damage it.

All that to say; no, walls are definitively not require. For me, they are more for aesthetics purposes if you want to make a castle or fort, than a real asset in the game.

If you care little about asthetics you can raise the ground to make a wall. If its high enough that you have to sprint run up it then mobs cant get over it.

...yep, slightly raised plateau across the base, is all you need. Keep structures back from edge to mitigate Troll splash...then I'll do a trench around the raised earth, easily jumped by PC, not-so-much by the NPC's, LOL..

Nobody has any intention of building a wall.

if you have a "The ground is shaking" attack, then you will get multiple Trolls come at your base. if you have wood fence it will stop them for maybe their first swing at it. after that they will bust through easily and then move onto your house. if you have anything against the wall inside your home and they hit the wall of your house, their splash damage will go through and smash your closest items.

I usually do a trench then wood walls, but figured at some point the dev's will fix this so i've gone with a 3 thick Stone wall around my base to see if that can withstand the blows from the Trolls. also don't forget now, that the Furlings and the Berserkers will be inc. next to your base once you defeat last boss.

The key is "doors" all mobs seems to go for doors first not specifically walls. so your door placement and how many you have is key. I only have 1 door on my outside wall now, and anytime my base gets attacked they go straight for that. so i know right off the bat where to go when i see the message of i'm being attacked.

I'd rather have trolls smash my outer walls before they start smashing my stash and valuable stuff.

You have a house. But then, you have a turnip field, a family of boars in a corral, and a shipyard, and.... gets a number of wandering creatures on each of them, constantly.

There will quickly be too many targets, too vulnerable.

Unlike anything with a workbench, the monsters tend to ignore walls AND what's behind them. It will not only block attacks, it will stop them from happening (or being noticeable) to a large extent.

Go with the wall. It's really going to save you a lot of bother. It's not for PvP, it's for the monsters.

If you don't want to deal with the raiding parties you can Fight the bosses on another world seed.

early raids don't really have the gumption to get through a simple wooden stake wall, so if you want to ignore them, you can just keep planting turnips in the safety of your fenced backyard

It's completely up to you but as a fellow solo player, I'd say a simple wooden fence around your base might be a good idea:

It doesn't cost much to build since it's only 1 wood per piece and like you mentioned, I can easily jump over it to fight off mobs during raids.
