True.

Depending on your hardware, smoke and fire slow things down a lot more than just a big house. I run around my friend's huge castle just fine, with thousands of build pieces. But put just 6 fireplaces next to one another all lit at once...hoo boy.
But it's true it's gotten better with the last update.

It did pre hearth and home big time, but it seems the update helped fix a lot of lag.

seems ok if you do it on an island so there isn’t much other stuff to load

There is absolutely 100% lag and stuttering if you build a very large house or base. However “large” is a vague term so what is large for you may not be large for me. I once built a mega mansion, seriously ridiculously big. It is completely unusable as the second i get near it, my game (and my friends games) start lagging and stuttering. Im thinking a big part of lag is chests because i did not remember the lag being as noticeable untili build my storage room with about 100-200 chests in it. Once i did that, it was awful.

A lot of it will depend on hardware. On the server I play on, there are 8-10 of us and we formed a single village with each of our homes, as well as a workshop area, boathouse,metalwork. portal nexus, and metalworks. Probably 12-15 medium to large buildings, with lit paths connecting them. My FPS drops from 100+ to 50-60, but I'm playing with max settings on a decent rig. Others have it worse, dropping into 30fps or lower but it's still playable.

Short answer, yes there will be some lag (fps drop is a better term) but it's much better now than it was a few months ago!

supposedly smoke and lights make it worse. I have not been able to build enough stuff to lag it, and my home has a 19 floor tile radius X 3 floors + trollhead high lofted terrain + planting and multiple lights, fires, and all sorts of stuff. That feels like a pretty large home, but I know people make bigger.

Definitely lags for me when I finish my houses. Too much for my computer to handle. But I love the game! Thank you, developers, for making it! Keep it growing!

only lag I've noticed in that regard is when I come over the rise near my main homestead and everything has to load. Once everything in render distance is loaded I don't notice any additional lag.

Also get a lot of lag when I use the portal, the more that has to load after you portal in the more lag your going to experience when a new location has to load. Most recommendations I've seen is build any portal hubs far away from your main homestead and keep them simple so they load fast.

Never built anything big enough in single player to cause lag, but my friends and I built a large city in multiplayer and once we started going well over 10000 instances we started getting some noticeable slow down.

depending on hardware. yes it will kill fps. i increase my base from 6k instances to 8k. i lost 20 fps (from 70-80 to 50-70.) i have a 1060.

I've actually done some massive terrafoming and structure building that has everything still loading while I'm standing on the original field waiting for the modifications i've made to load, so yes, modifying the land and the number of pieces can cause lag on load. Haven't noticed too much lag once loaded though.
