If you are not in plains yet for the stone pillars, you can plant a tree, especially the pine from dark forest, because it's tall and only has its crown up at the very end. The crown might be integrated somehow in your tower, f.ex. a garden area? Everything that touches the log of the tree acts like it is grounded (blue color).
Another way is to raise the ground in the middle of your tower and hide it in stone to get a raised basement.
Then of course you have corewood poles and later ironwood poles.
Remember, stone parts are foundations for wood. So if you start with stone you can go on with wood even higher.
Combinations off all those techniques can result in really high structures.
There are some good videos on YouTube about it, check it out!
Have fun!
I have done this and it works great, plus a very nice view at the top.
The only thing to be aware of is if the tree gets destroyed by a Troll, etc, most if not all of your structure will come down. I highly recommend you protect that tree. Raised earthen walls around it will help or run away from your home so the monsters don’t agro on you and destroy your structure. Good luck!

Apart from supporting structures with trees or big rocks, you can build higher by
- raising terrain (can be hidden within a wall
- placing iron gates as pillars (can be placed inside of walls)
- placing iron beams (which are worse than iron gates because they are shorter, i think)
Stone on top of the highest iron structure should be green and wood on top of the hightest stone should be blue. You can place core wood beams on top of the stone to further support your wood structure.

Use iron beams to support your structure, and if you are building even higher than those can go (which is pretty damn high), you can build it near a tall stone spire in the plains or a tree that you can’t cut down (like most trees in the swamp) as connecting any piece to them will automatically give it grounded (aka max) support
