Any way to make bridge over moat that monsters can't abuse?
So I've dug some moat from the land side of my base, problem is - I want a simple way to get in and out, but is such way I'm not compromising functionality of a moat. Obviously - there is no such thing here as lifting bridge. Also ideally I want to pass with cart - I'll be bringing ton of ores and wood soon.

i've seen images where people use gates to cross a moat. You can walk across a closed gate and when you put enough next to each other you can even wheel a cart across. Open the gates and nothing can move across.
Fairly new to the game, just a few days but my immediate reaction to the invasions was to build a moat and a gate with pole fence at the top of the moat.
Closed it up with a gate with a roof on top of it to avoid it getting that rotten color. I assume wood eventually breaks if weathered too much? Only gotten graydwarves and animal invasions though.

it won't break. It goes to half health and stops. If the enemy break something you get the materials back, but that won't help if they bust your 3000 hour cathedral build. Its best to keep them far away from major building projects. If its just a standard square home with utilities, fighting them can be fun.

I either make a narrow bridge, or sometimes just a small platform/ramp I can go back and forth to.

For the plains, I have a stone tube, cart width and iron gates at the ends. Never had anyone get through yet, also previously had wooden gates. Again no ingress.
In meadows, trolls just smashed at the unditched walls, ignored gates. In black forest, skeleton surprise stood near wall where boars were on other side, no ditch.
So I put a gate up, and often a ditch, remember to shut it, and to be honest not had wandering monsters. So my suggestion is... a gate!

I left a narrow land bridge. Put some spikes down to funnel mobs into my field of fire. more spikes in the moat to deal with whatever falls in. Mine is too narrow for a cart but you could adjust. Not perfect but works.

Leave a small gap in the bridge that you are able to walk over. Mobs will see it as unpassable due to not joining the land.

I can't then cross it with cart - unless I just keep placing and removing two pieces every time I'm crossing it with cart. Seriously lifting bridge is what this game needs the most now.
So I guess there is no clever way to accomplish what I need it seems with currently available building assets.

If the gap is small enough we are talking no bigger than an about 3cm the cart crosses it fine but the mobs see it as unpathable even from that tiny gap.

Place a 2x2 floor piece on each side of the gap. Connect 2m beams from one floor piece to the other across the gap (you might need more than one beam if the gap is bigger than 2m), leaving a space between them to allow for cart wheels. If one side is higher than the other, use wooden steps to make a ramp. You can then pull a cart across no problem but enemies will not cross. I had a skeleton attack and they all stood on the other side and wouldn't cross.

wow, seems to be working, I got an aggro on mob and it wouldn't cross. I can walk over the gap so I hope cart will be be able to pass too. If so - that would be perfect cheese, while having 95% legit bridge.

The bridges over my moat are pine wood logs, the cart crosses with ease a whole single log gap while mobs get confuzzled, so in my experience doesn't need to be that small of a gap to work

I secured my base like this. Deep enough to avoid trolls attack.

There is always a way. You just have to be clever.
