Absolutely love the game so...

... please help me find another one like it. If it exists.

Over 1200 hours now and I really and truly love the game.

Things I really enjoy about it.

1. You start with nothing. Your weak and easy to kill. However slowly you start finding stuff to help you fight and survive better and longer.

2. Its an open world concept but you must move forward to truly progress. It's just that you can take forever doing it or go full ham.

3. The combat system. I agree it is easy to master but I have multiple ways of dealing damage and the abundance of different weapon types offer good variety as well.

4. Building. You can go huge and great or small and manageable. Speaking of which some of the things the community has built is absolutely amazing.

5. Not forced to upgrade armor and weapons if you choose not too. Doing so obviously helps but refusing to allows for more skillful and careful play.

6. The Viking theme. As someone who loves the Fantasy genre a viking fits right in.

So what I am asking is using the above as a guideline can anyone recommend a game to me that is similar in design.

Please note I do not like 1st person shooter types like Fallout. I have tried it multiple times and I simply don't enjoy it. In addition I have tried both Oblivion and Skyrim and for whatever reason I didn't enjoy them either. I think they are too open world for me. See note 2.
Another note is I play on an older pc so the game can't be too new or I can't play it.

Thank you.

Len's Island recently put out a new update, so there's a lot more content today than there was a year ago.

I love Valheim and I agree with your points. Playing solo only.

Been in The Long Dark at the beginning and recently again after years, and been disappointed by the lack of progress of game mechanics - they focused on Storymode more than the barely logical game design (you can still freeze to death next to a chimney and all sort of things made out of wood and paper posters which you can´t collect i.e. - need paper and wood to make fire)

What I can recommend is Green Hell. While playing it a year ago I had maximum fun like in Valheim right now. It is different because of a story, it has a multiplayer which I didn´t try, and it´s (like all games) best played without having any clue what you´re doing. Don´t spoil yourself - a rush through the game would not be the same thrilling and surprising fun.

Oh yeah...and the well known Subnautica - damn, very nice hell of a solo player game in a nice and tense setting the more you discover the world - the better it gets.

And of course the RPG genre diamond should be mentioned, loved it very much but it´s rather historical and authentic, taking place in a realistic historical setting with no dragons and stuff, no survival craft either, it´s very enjoyable: https://store.steampowered.com/app/379430/Kingdom_Come_Deliverance/

Grounded has a very similar feel to Valheim. Highly recommend it. There's also Sons of the Forest which has a pretty interesting build mechanic and storyline to play through.

Scratches the same itch for me as Valheim, though you wouldn't think so.

Not a Viking game but comes out 6 hours from now. I will let you know what I think in a few days. Cant wait to try it out. It has about 85% of what your looking for if it lives up to the hype.

Have you tried modded Skyrim? With an alternate start mod, a few survival mods, and a couple of weapon/armor mods, you can easily roleplay as a nomad Viking hunter roaming the wilds of Skyrim. There are even some building mods that let you build and decorate houses. There are plenty of side quests available if you don't want to just wander around aimlessly (or you can always do some of the main story quests if you want to move the game along).

The Long Dark is an amazing game, but it's vastly different from Valheim (even if they might both fall into the generic "survival" genre). There is not much combat, and absolutely no building at all, and the world feels very empty. I recommend trying it out if you like solo survival but it's definitely not for everyone.

I haven't played much Medieval Dynasty -- I keep meaning to go back to it -- but it might be one to check out.

Savage Lands is back in development under a new developer, that might be another one to check out.

Did you try The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (with the huge Community fix/mod/add)?. It is an open world and you a are free to not follow side quests or main story quest, and just explore the world, but if you accept it, you may chain up quests. There's a lot to read though, and graphics were already considered weird back then. The game comes with a comprehensive editor that allows you to add things and quests (or a huge base), but there is no building capacity in game (you only get some buildings by quests).

I checked out Conan Exiles and will look a bit deeper. Ty for that suggestion. I did play Morrowind as it was my first foray into the elder scrolls world. But like the next 2 as I mentioned it just couldn't hold my attention. I agree that the series would be perfect for me and I can not explain why they failed and Valheim didn't.

For some reason The Long Dark keeps coming up as a good substition. Yes I know it is nothing like Valheim but I am open to hear discussion on it.
