Only fence for taming?
Can I use any kind of fencing/penning for boars and such for taming or can I use anything? Making an extension of the little island I'm on and I wanted to know if I needed to accommodate the fence as part of the extension or if the high dirt walls will be enough.

You don't even need a wall/pit/fence. Just sneak up and chuck their food on the ground and back off far enough that they won't aggro. They will keep going to the food pile on their own and tame. That's how I tamed my first Lox, back before H&H.

I built small pen outside main base and outside moat. It has narrow path to bridge with a piece missing. When I came across 1 star a good ways from base. I simply ran to this pen, stopping now and then to make sure boar was in pursuit and still aggroed. Then have boar chase you inside pen and walk out, closing gate. Leave food. Takes about 2 days. I also stayed nearby to make sure nothing attacked him cause this pen is outside my moat. Wasn't babysitting. Just picking berries or cutting wood not too far away to check on him now and again.
Once tamed, I close missing part in bridge and push him through pathway that I narrow so he can't turn around. Then they go into pen/pit with other boars. Still have outside of moat 'training' pen for when I find a 2 star. I went to all pits for permanent boar farm after reading someones tip.

On that note, is it worth building an early pen around a boar runestone? Before you start doing this, learn where they spawn as it will save you a lot of hassle in the future.

Fence or the half wall. I generally create a 2 x 2 area with 1 section missing and then wait for the boar to attack me in that area. Ignore its attack and drop the last piece in place to trap it, then jump out. Throw about 10 berries in to the pen from the safety of your workbench which you would built nearby.
Leave.
Takes a while but eventually the boar will tame and you can pet it. Sneak closer to check its progress and if its alerted, just run away,
Then you have the fun of getting it back to your camp/base/house. the easiest way is to build a series of fences to form a run and block it every so often when the boar moves along (you can push it but at some point it will try to run behind you). This can take a while so set up your run whilst the boar is taming.
Keep it simple and leave the fences once built as they can act as an extra line of defence.
When you have finally herded it where you want it (rinse and repeat until you have at least 3 of them), you can throw berries or mushrooms, or carrots (or turnips) in and they will eat and mate. Cull down to 3 now and again for lots of boar meat. As above, the 1 & 2 star boar give more meat so if you can tame them, you are golden.

you don't need any structures to tame at all. just mine a pit(raise a wall)low\high enough to cover the whole boar\wolf (so they woun't see you. and throw food inside. then just sit in stealth nearby(i believe it's either 10 or 20m, so you actually do some stuff while waiting) for ~30 minutes and the animals will be tamed. just make sure they are not aggroed on you (red (!) above their head)

They used to be able to escape a single wall... better to double wall to make sure none get away.
They will freak out and not tame or breed if they see fire.. another good reason to have a double wall to block their view.
They need to be fed and you need to be "close", enough so that they spawn in the world. So plan on hanging around the area for a while.
Alright, thanks. Also thanks to everyone's input in general on the specifics! I'll post a screenshot in a bit, currently making a corridor to more rocks for the project.

as long as the boars are inside an enclosure, you can even use rooftops if you want haha
You can use anything to be honest, the easiest one is the fence as it serve that role quite well and cost less compare to the other base parts

Ah, ok thanks! I cleared a lot of the meadow I started in but stopped being able to find them so easily, figured I'd start farming them. Do I have to keep feeding them or only to get them to breed? Also will they go untame or disappear or anything like that if I go too far from them? I haven't gone into the black forest yet.

It's just a matter of dropping something they'll eat nearby and being in the vicinity but not close enough to freak them out (same goes for fire sources) until the gold hearts stop popping out. They're immune to despawn as soon as they take the food. Like the player they won't starve without food, they just won't be able to heal.

I have fed them raspberries, blueberries, red mushrooms and carrots. Not sure about anything else. I put a stair up to almost top of fence to toss stuff in until tamed. They won't tame if they see you. They will freak out until you go away and they relax again and start to tame. You can see the amount they have tamed by hovering over them with the mouse. Wish that worked further away from them, game should make a sound when they are tamed... then you can go in and pet them and they will love you.
I was attacked by trolls and lost many in the battle at the gates... RIP Porky and Hamton.

I am thinking of giving up on boars. I don't have cultivator yet so can't plant carrots. I spend every other day gathering mushrooms or strawberries to feed 3 pens of boars. Thinking of just eating the mushrooms and strawberries and not having boars. Cause they eat all my strwberries and such and I am sick of honey all the time.

It really is kind of odd since the H&H update. I am thinking of giving up on boars. I don't have cultivator yet so can't plant carrots. I used to stockpile each thing as much as I could... but as I progress now post H&H I feel this isn't needed due to changing your food so quickly anyway... instead of wasting time getting a ton of carrots to have a full box of carrot soup it seems better now to just make a few and try to reach the next food upgrade and work on different stuff.
Really have to get used to the new system. I think it will take a few playthroughs for me to sort it all out.. the update really changed a lot of the strategies I used to use for progression.

You don't need that many boars tbh. And later if you get 1 and 2 star boars they drop a lot more meat when slaughtered as well.
I have a pen of like 5-7 2 star and never had to little meat.
You also do not have to feed them constantly, but they wont breed unless happy.
There is also a limit of how many you can have in an area before they stop breeding.
