Bad News it has an alarming tendency to dump your progress!

Sorry old chap I know what you mean about forgetting to back up but external HDD's for the game are also a possibility I have an Ext USB3 SSD that does pretty well for just that purpose.

I'm fairly certain Cloud save is the default, actually. I first picked it up at the beginning of last month, and all my characters and worlds are saved in the cloud.

I formatted my pc last week and I had a few characters I'd been playing on but they're all gone now

I have no idea when it became the default, and previous configuration files would not be removed by an update. You can definitely move them between cloud and local storage now, though... live and learn; backups should be made before you need them.
