Different games, Son of the forest is really new and has not much content to be honest.
If you want to play a game that has high quality graphics and some realistic mechanics you can see the Sons of the Forest.
BUT! Valheim is a great game that doesnt needs a high end pc, offers lot of playhours and even if you finish the game, you can join servers and play more than never.
I had like 300h in valheim just in vanilla with friends and now im around 2200 because i joined a RP server and daaaamn... the amount of stuff you can do in this game with just a couple of QOL mods and lot of peopel around, nothing that SonOfTheForest can do.

Completely different games.

Sons FORCES progression through the story, Valheim does not.

Essentially "best" is going to be defined by your subjective interests/wants. I suggest watching video streams / let's play videos of both and decide from there for yourself. We're not you and thus we have different considerations potentially.

Haven't played Sons of the forest cause I'm busy playing Valheim. Also Valheim.

I haven't played Sons, but did have some fun in the original Forest in VR. Despite the fun of running around and feeling like I'm actually camping (in a horror movie) I prefer Valheim.

Maybe the question to you is, do you prefer an open-ended experience with maps that change with each playthrough, or do you prefer a more curated experience? Sandbox or theme park?

To actually make a comparison in some aspects.

When i first played Valheim i was super into it and didn't really feel like a horror game. However the very moment i encountered a troll and i didn't realize it was a troll it almost made me poo.

When i first played Sons of the forest i knew it was a horror game but to be honest it just isn't that scary to me.

Base building valheim wins.

Size of world, Valheim wins

Longevity, Valheim wins.

Endless amount of gameplay, Valheim wins.

I bought Sons of the Forest, but I can't get past the crafting interface. If anyone knows of an "Idot's guide to The Forest" I'd love to see it. It's the same problem I have with Ark and pretty much any MMO. If I have to go to weapons training school, I'm out!

A big draw to me with Valheim is/was the simple crafting interface and combat mechanics. If I have to remember too many button presses to get anything done, it's not fun for me. That's also part of the reason that I play with controller. If you can't fit the controls reasonably on the buttons on a controller, then I'm probably not going to like it.
