returning player confused over changes in game

It has been over a year since I played due to technical issues. Now I am finally back on my computer and have found that a lot of my skills and worlds are either gone or have these bottons next to them that states they are old files and will not work with current version without some kind of problems.
these worlds were the first ones I created and have most of my high level gears and skills that I do not have in the new worlds that I just created to check if new worlds would bring them back. they don't. It used to be that if you picked up a new item you got all the skills to craft and use that item. That no longer happens either. So basically I have to get skills that are on work tables higher then the one we start with.
Is there any way to fix this or am I looking at having to start the entire game over. Which would stink since I had beaten the final boss from the mountains.

You could use the console to set your skills to what they should be. For you world, you could make a new world, perhaps with the same seed. Or you could use a mod called "Upgrade world" to literally upgrade your world to add new content. If using the same old world, you might want to use to console and the optterrain command near where you have previous modified the terrairn up or down.

the warning can be ignored. Your old world should open fine.
if you pick up an item, and it is a *CRAFTING* item, you may learn recipes for it. I noted that one thing I picked up was both a food and a seed, and it didn't acknowledge its seedliness (recipe to grow it) until I also had the cultivator in hand. So there may be some bugs with that. But regardless, if you have in hand all the materials to make something, it unlocks the recipe for you, or should. You may need to pick them all up at once, or check the craft station to see if you knew it and already have it marked, whatever, but nothing much has changed here.
Old worlds may not spawn in new content correctly and may reset terrain edits. Old worlds under the influence of mods may be completely broken. But assuming you didn't use mods and don't care about new content, you can go there and tear up your old stuff and bring it into a new world to rebuild; Ive done this and it works fine.
