Random damage or deterioration?
I restarted a new game in a new world now that I know the basics better and I noticed that the big base that I created there kind of deteriorates. As in I go on a trip and when I come back there's quite a few tiles damaged. None of my other structures scattered around the map take any damage like that nor I recall my previous game having that issue on my main base.
What could it be? Bad foundation? Squatters? A bug?

they stop at 50%, so if you like or don't mind the look for a walkway, its fine to leave it unroofed.Oh that's a relief. I thought that if I left it unatended I'd come back to a bunch of ruins.

Sounds like water damage from rain. Most wooden objects will deteriorate if they are not covered by a roof.That's gotta be it, because I have a few areas like balconies and hallways without roof. I wasn't aware of this mechanic.

First thing I would suspect were misaligned roofing.
Without a screenshot or something there really is nothing to go on.
