Horrible game mechanic choice

TBH losing levels when you die is absolutely cancer considering how long it takes to level them up died like 2 or 3 times trying to beat the elder for the first time and running level went from 41 to 33. Trash mechanic take it out ffs

I dont mind the gear drop its just the skill loss that is annoying it feels like its just a huge waste of time

You got it backward. Skills are nice but don't make a big difference. When I lose my top gear I'm kind of really pissed.

FWIW you can play the entire game with very low character skills. So if you die a lot like me it's not the end of the world, although it does mean the relative difficulty tends to be a bit higher since you will be doing less damage, etc. I don't like that particular mechanic either but it really doesn't matter that much. And the hidden benefit is of course that it helps with discouraging careless dying, not as a purpose in itself, but as means of combating the "it doesn't matter"-feeling that accompanies penalty free deaths in games. So if they removed it they would have to address that problem in a different way.

The leveling that matters is what gear and other inventory you have such as food. Losing all items on death (if not permanently) is way more grim of a mechanic.

Back when I was your age, if you died you had to buy the game again!

Skill level is not that important. A few levels lost won't make or break your game.

In my opinion, i found games similar to Valheim that have little to no death penalties tend to get boring as there is no real challenge to survival. A well balanced death penalty with challenging survival gameplay can give you the feeling of true accomplishment when you overcome obstacles the gameplay throws at you.

The penalties for Death in this game are so tepid, I can't even believe people think they're "Harsh"

Have we truly regressed so far?

There's an argument to be made about the death penalty in context of certain things like falling off your roof, or other oddities but these threads are never actually contextualized like that.

That's entirely the point. You're not supposed to die, you're supposed to be punished for dying, so you learn from it. Valheim is a very hard game to actually die in, once you have a working knowledge of the mechanics, and it's almost impossible to die in once you ahve the feather cape.

I don't mind dropping my gear, even when sometimes you won't be able to get it back, that's a fine punishment, but I agree the skill loss is too much. It's why, when I'm one hit away from death, I slap ESC then F5 then type God and run away from the fight saying "yep... that was a death"
As soon as I'm safe I toggle God off and keep playing. I thought this would make it boring, but in truth I hate resorting to that so much that I find myself playing more cautiously to avoid it. In addition, since I don't have to waste hours on recovery, I've gotten better at fighting and timing parries.
Judge me if you want but I'm already ok with it.

Until the new setting go in, there's a mod for that.

I got rid of the skill loss but kept the corpse runs. I've never liked that as a mechanic in any game I've played, and even those games didn't dock you more than one level at a time. Corpse runs add a fun challenge, but thinking about my numbers is not immersive.

Options are coming to reduce death penalties. In the meantime, use a mod or die less.
