ctrl clicking an item in your inventory will drop it in front of you

it also works for moving stuff into/out of chests quickly

You just click and drag it out of your inventory. Your character will toss it in front of them.

Hold shift then left-click to split stacks.
Dropped items go the direction your character is facing, not your camera.

you need to face where you want it, which is not the same as where your camera is facing. It takes a little practice.

That would be great if it were true, but then it wouldn't take any practice. It would just go forward, but it doesn't. It doesn't even seem to go in the direction that the character is facing. It's at least a bit off to the side, but you can't even tell the direction that the character is facing if you're in an enclosed space, since you can't see your character.

Ohh, if they would just give us true first person view...

Right click like you're blocking. That will let you pivot in the direction you want. Open the inventory after you are facing the right way. Moving with the inventory open doesn't seem to reset the direction.

Added: but your character will still throw it. Hard to hit exactly the spot you want.

To feed boars I will break the stack up into sizable stacks 4-8 food items, stand back from the group of boars while facing them, then click on the stack drag it away and below the inventory then click again. That will generally throw the food 3-5 metres. I like to feed my boars in the corners of my pen as it causes them to crowd together in order to feed which facilitates breeding.
