Development plans for multiplayer security?
Hi all, does anyone know if there are there any plans to address multiplayer issues like griefing, vandalism, etc.? Something like No Man's Sky multiplayer restrictions, like no player damage, no structure damage? Maybe there's a mod that addresses this? Thanks.

The dev's don't care about giving more power to server owners to allow server-side characters, and anti-griefing measures (because yes, it can be done easily), but if they did this game would be insanely better on every level.
It would be the single most important update the dev's ever made. Unfortunately there are mods to support this. I have tried it, but it's not as easy as just slapping on the mod, you have to do a bunch of weird stuff to your network and install other things that could be easily outdated.
Ark and GTA Online disagree with the "done easily" part.

Enabling griefing is conscious choice on the part of Rockstar, and No Man's Sky is not griefer free, but it is better. They're both only (for the most part) run on shared servers, though. It's relatively easy to run an Ark or Valheim server, or play a local game. I don't know why anyone would want to play on a server with a bunch of randoms.
It's not easy to implement multiplayer restrictions in such an open world. You could not allow players to change other players structures, but what happens when someone builds a wall around your structure so you can't access it, or digs the ground out from under your structure?

There is an item in game called a ward that does what you are asking already.
Unless something has changed, players can simply destroy the ward. That's not terribly useful.

It seems there's a bit of confusion here. The intent of the response was to point out that dealing with cheaters and griefers is not at all easy.
Rockstar/Take Two does not under any circumstances allow cheating, and neither does Wildcard (makers of Ark). Both games are rife with menu/exploit users and have been for years. I would recommend following some of those companies' people on social media to hear their unfiltered takes on that particular topic. Ark's lead CM, Cedric Burkes, has been particularly vocal on the subject as of late, lamenting about how so much resources and dev time could be freed up if they didn't have to combat so much cheating -- for every exploit Wildcard fixes, it seems two more are discovered and put to illicit use for lulz/profit/both.
It's not just limited to those two games or survival as a genre either, as I'm sure most gamers well know.
So, no, there isn't much that can be done "easily" that would be effective against today's common cheatmode seller. (As a personal aside, I loathe them. Back in the days of MUDs, before monetization of exploits was even a consideration, I used to be a very good triggerbot writer. I miss being able to automate my character in a game, because it reduces the amount of materials I can collect to help others. That's why I and most others ran the triggerbots -- to help others instead of ourselves. Anyway. XD)

What about destruction of other player's bases and attacking other players? The ward, while useful, seems like an incomplete solution.
Ideally this should be something enforced by the game settings, not a piece of structure.

This. play on a password protected world and only invite those you trust will not vandalize/grief. There's your security
Letting random people into your world is just asking for trouble.

setting up a daily periodic backup of the world and player files would help too, worst case you would only lose changes made since the last backup. Theres also the fact you can start up a cheat world to get back anything you lost. The most painful thing would be having to rebuild stuff.

They have the ward but this game is a small player coop game. It's not really the type of game you invite 9 random strangers to and play. More of the invite your close 3 friends and go sailing around and dye a bunch while sharing amterials.

IIRC you can boot the game with console (F5) enabled and slash ban as well. Password protect is best protect.

The Ward is completely useless for stopping a would-be thief / griefer... despite it's description, the ward only slows down the inevitable entry and theft, but in NO way prevents it. The ward basically causes weapons to do reduced damage, but doesn't STOP damage.
PVP is a different matter... pvp between 2 people cannot occur unless BOTH parties turn on pvp mode, so a griefer cannot simply show up and attack / kill another player directly.
Although a random can't attack another player, uninvited, there are other ways to grief, which could be far far worse such as random player summoning a pack of high level mobs to run rampant or worse yet, summoning high level mobs with zero hp which will crash a server instantly from the suddenly high amount of loot dropping all at once. BOTH of these are examples of real occurrences which people have reported in the past.
I STRONGLY caution against allowing unknown people on your server unless /until better admin controls become available (IF they ever do)

Well it is at it's core a Co-Op game I would say put a password and admin a server. Open servers this is an issue. However you can still kick people that do this I believe.
At this stage of development there are almost no server settings at all that you would see in other games of this style. I don't know if the Devs plan on adding them. Of course no player damage just opens you up to a new issue. Lets build a big wall around the elder... or Bonemass... etc. I realize there is always more than one spawn for this... but Grievers will generally find away to grief and the harder you make the more they will try.
