i like the crystal battleaxe your attacks need to be on time but the damage is good it can take down abominations in around 5 hits, plus hitting groups of ads and taking them down.
main issue the reduced speed when equipped.

Lmfao, this makes me glad I never tried hunting for a 2 star wolf.

Deathsquitos I never had a problem with.. they literally buzz when near by and die in one hit from anything.

But, on-topic: the only thing hard about the Mountains is the severe Stamina usage due to the terrain often being.. less than ideal. If you find a bit of a flat spot with an abandoned cabin or something on it, make a base there, it will save you time. (Though I prefer the abandoned towers personally.)

Just watch out for Golems! Even in Plains equipment they're a hassle. The pointy bois are easy to parry though. Other variant is sorta tricky.

I have been camped by Deathsquitos one too many times, golems I can get away from and I have strategies for dealing with wolves. But Deathsquitos can't be fooled by a pit or a stone wall... (Wolves can chew through a stone wall but it gives one time)

The plains have always been my rough point for this reason, and the fact that even after killing 20 gobbers, you still hear giggling and wonder how many little bleepers can be a camp.....

Last night I was out of tar and looking for a pit, then I spent 4 or 5 hours trying to get my gear back because I got killed on a deathsquito spawn point by gobs, not the squito. Regardless it took me to a dark place by the time the night was over lol. Each biome presents its own challenges that each individual may or may not find hard.

for me, the only tough part about the mountains is the actual topography. it's the easiest place in the game to run out of stamina in bad ways because the other biomes are pretty flat by comparison which makes it easier to dodge groups. if you run out of stamina while wedged between rocks or on the sheer edge of a rock face? bad times.

Good point. Swamp is where you learn how to parry / dodge because as you correctly stated, that's where mobs actually hit and you can't just face tank everything or run around shooting arrows left right and centre. Once you have those skills sorted, rest of the game gets easy.

This is why we see new players rage quit when they skip biomes, go to the plains and get corpse camped by a deathsquito. They are skipping those biomes that teach you how to play.

I only find Mountains harder for gathering materials really. When you think about it, Silver has to be found first, (and limited) Frost glands take a good while to accumulate, even though drakes are common. Caves are random % chance to spawn certain materials.

I never had much issues gathering enough frost glands, but then I only use it for Eyescream. ;)

Edit: Just a thought that occurred to me... The OP might not be using the right weapon when dealing with wolves. Axes no longer cut it after the swamp. They're way too slow.

I personally found wolves pretty manageable when using the Atgeir. I actually think that the Atgeir is by far the best weapon ingame.

My latest character Gudrun is roaming the plains and climbing the mountains in... Root gear, and so far I've survived. Thanks to the Atgeir, which can keep mobs at range.

Honestly? Once you get past the swamps, everything seems similar tough. The swamps are still the biggest hurdle for most players, as they are now introduced to mobs that hit so hard that relying on your armor alone will not be enough to survive.

Once you master combat in the swamps, everything after that feels about similar.

Wolves are somehow in their own class, since they're so eff'n fast.

I honestly feel the mountains is the easiest zone, day, or night, but your opinion is valid.

What equipment are you using? The wolves are very quick, so I can understand someone having issues if they are using the wrong equipment.
