3080 TI & 5950x Ryzen 9
Only about 40 FPS... what gives? I had 30 FPS on my 760 GTX AMD Phenom 2 processor computer from 11 years ago. The only difference is now I'm max settings and before I was min settings. My brain is too slow/dumb to notice an actual outstanding graphical difference between the two? But I feel I should have at least 80fps now.

there are a number of youtube videos about boosting FPS for Valheim. I did a bunch of stuff and out in the world i get about 100fps, and about 70-80 near my building projects. It goes down to about 60 in my portal hub. all at 1080p full screen. GTX 1060 6gb Ryzen 5 1600.
I'm not a hardware expert by any means but I feel like your setup should be crushing this game at 1440 even on max settings. but again, i'm no expert.
do you have GeForce experience? are your drivers up to date?

yeah i have geforce experience and my drivers are up to date. yeah, it seems weird to me that it caps at 40 near my building. is there something in particular that would drop FPS? do i use too many torches or something?

You can test the torches by checking your fps at your base and away from your base.there are a number of youtube videos about boosting FPS for Valheim. FPS away from my base seems to be an average of 70, sometimes 80, sometimes 50 again. Just in the dark forest. Let me try mountains. You can test the torches by checking your fps at your base and away from your base.

FPS in mountains is 100-110, pretty good. With spikes as low as 95 to 200 FPS. But rare spikes? Mostly stable at 110 average. So something called Instances is 2500 in mountains with 9.5ms? but at my base instances is 5300 with 20.0ms
FPS in swamp is 55 FPS, with 17ms and 4400 instances. Pretty bad.
FPS in a cave is an average of 110 to 120. Also instances in mountain can reach 4000? whatever instances mean... but FPS still remains 100 in mountains, so probably this doesn't affect FPS.

Sounds like particle generator problems. Things like torches and Frostner that create a bunch of extra particles could be slowing you down. Not sure if Valheim specifically has a setting for particle generators, but it's a common FPS problem in video games in general.

I've only ever seen something like that if the person is trying to run a game in 4K.

i mean my monitor is set to HDR and 2560x1440 res but i don't think my game is at that resolution.
oh okay, yeah i'm 2560 x 1351 in windowed (it's not 1440 because it's windowed to show the windows start bar so it ends up being a little smaller). even in full screen i would get the same FPS. i just have the 1 building in the area, from my perspective the building isn't that big, maybe on the smaller/medium size and not much going on here, it's not like i'm in a city. it shows 50 fps, but it fluctuates between 40-50 etc. https://i.ibb.co/Stp8PdY/valheim.png
i'm just wondering if this is normal for a 5950x and 3080TI... I've heard other people with similar systems get like 120 FPS. are they BS'ing me? or is something going on?
screenshot of my settings

these are settings my game decided to default too... i didn't tamper with them in anyway.
P.S I feel like 100 gig games that bring my processor and GPU to 70 degrees celcius would have slower FPS but my FPS is higher and the GPU/processor work harder. Valheim is like a 2 gig game... and my processor and GPU don't run hot with it at all.
