Graphics...

So does anyone know even on maximum settings why the graphics look the way they do? Seems to be nothing like the store images and videos and looks more like minecraft?

I don't mind the graphical style

That being said, I did install a texture mod that spiffs up the textures to 1080p scaling, available on nexusmods after a good while playing it vanilla. I didn't even really need to do that, the art and graphical style is pretty darn impressive, which is very noticeable when you're in the black forest at dusk when its rainy and windy....and the lightning strikes lighting up the wet rocks and wet bark. It's really well done.

In case you want it to be a touch above its current level, the mod is nexusmods/valheim/mods/1030 "Willybach's HD"

One would think that but i got better fps when i used gfx mods, i had used coco or w/e at the time. It increased my fps by like 15-20 for some reason unknown.

Again, it has nothing to do with performance. It's an art style.

We are used to low-res resolution and models (and less details), because we don't see it much. What's new in Valheim, I believe, is that near-field resolution and models are also low. Any screenshot about close environnement informs the viewver about this.

As far as performance is considered, I prefer this choice over a cartoonish stylization (presumably to lower surfaces rendition duty).

Contrary to your claim about this not looking like images in the steam store....

The texture bitmaps for the character are like, at the most 256 x256 and the UV mapping is in a tiny-tiny square in the corner, so think 128x128 for the playercharacter mesh. That is why it has the graphical look it does. No amount of 'aftereffects' will make resolution like that into something spectacular...it is, what it is.

It is both a style choice and performance choice.

I find it quite charming.

Contrary to popular belief, video games are art, and this is called an "art style". It looks like that because that's how they want it to look. Does every game need to look like the next copy-pasted FPS?

Oh, good, mods just locked the last thread about this and a new one has already spawned.

Thanks for the info, not meant as a criticism just a question. Didn't see the graphical style from the Store page images.

A player's brain is perfectly capable of adaptation after a little while. It's like returning to HD after watching a video in 4K++.

Iron Gate chose a stylized graphical look that blends low-resolution textures and sparse polygonal detail with modern materials, lighting and post effects. The visuals are inspired by the early days of 3D graphics, like the style seen in PS1 titles and old DOS-era 3D games (before hardware acceleration and texture filtering was a thing).
