Using only wood and core wood (stone was not yet unlocked), my friends and I built a bridge tall enough for at least the karve to pass under, across a river. It was a huge challenge to get the top roof pieces to hold, and took more than a little tearing down and rebuilding to accomplish. But, it was super fun, and now the bridge is there to always remind us of the project.

Very nice, makes me want to find a river and build something over it , had super cool river on a previous map, we could navigate on it , with trees going over, super nice. Haven't found any river on the new map we've started since H&H though

I know the feeling. Had a hard time building a covered dock for my boat as well because of the height/structural limitations of only wood.

My advice to the OP is to try to make it in relative shallow water. If the water level is lower than half of the pole, it wont rot. The hoe and the farming tool (cant remember the name) will be your friends.

The general trick is to start by using basic walls to build a grid of snap points embedded in the floor as deep as you can. Building supports up is easy, building them down is a gigantic pain in the bum.

If at all possible, use the mod that stops 1" high waves knocking the hammer from your hand.

I built a dock into deep water by using the "devcommands" and using the "fly" command to go underwater and build the supports. You want strong supports in water because they will decay overtime.

The answer is yes, and no.

Yes, if it's just shallow enough to build into. Stone works best.

Obviously no if it's too deep to reach the bottom to make supports.

Some YTers built a tavern on top of a bridge spanning a small river (bigger than a stream). It was a long and frustrating process of learning what you can and can't do with the game engine.
