The wiki says you get weapon xp for hitting other players even with the default PvP protection on. Does that apply to tame creatures too? Can you just harmlessly poke at a Lox butt all day and become the ultimate warrior?

You can always park 2 - 3 tamed lox beside a tarpit. You will either get a couple of tar from the lox killing the Growth, or you will be harvesting lox materials off the ground.

I wonder if that's intended. The knife is supposed to do 1000 damage and Lox have 1000 hit points. Perhaps they forgot the combat engine would modify those values.
It makes the whole thing hurt me more emotionally, so I guess it's fair from the Lox's point of view.

No, you need 2 or 3 hits to kill it with butchers knife.
But its better to enable friendly fire and kill it with weapons to build up your weapon skills.

So lox behaves like a wild lox even as tamed, great. Good to know so its a creature I wont be taming.
There doesnt seem to be "wild" and "tamed" difference other than the "tamed" isn't trying(?) to attack players.
They still go nuts and destroy buildings which makes no sense.

Uhm.. i got 5 tames in a wooden stake pen and they are chill as my boars. Long as a greyling doesn't wander close enough, of course. But that's why there's guard dogs outside

If there's enemies within their range they go on the stomp. I placed workbenches in a lage circumference around their pen so they don't get enemies coming close. I still get some from time to time, it's annoying but I wuv my lox, so much I eat them sometimes

they don't have to live in the plains. Mine is at my home in the meadows. Just ride it back home, if you can; my home is near a plains biome and is easily reachable with a short ride. To tame it I used hoewall though.

We can't even get 1 or 2* Lox so we're better off just hunting for them, and the dev's need to really fix the whole "animals clipping through pen walls" problem that's causing a major amount of damage to anything we build. For the past week i've been dealing with Tamed Lox and my final verdict is: They are utter trash, and a complete mistake on the dev's part to give them the ability to do so much damage to walls while tamed. A complete waste of time and effort, for all time ever. Why the hell did I just spend so much time lowering and raising ground, completely ruining the landscape, just to keep some giant oaf's in one place to butcher like 1-2 lox every 24 hours? What a waaaaaaaaaaaste of time. Only time it's worth it is when you can ride literally one.

The visual clipping through walls is just that in my experience. Visual. Like I stated above. My loxes don't damage my base. They are a welcome addition and are far from trash.
Even when the horde attacks the loxes don't break my palisades. Only the horde does.

Don't know what you are doing wrong.
after taming they become hostile with native life and anything at all will set them off (destroy their pen) or the enemy (not counting deer) will attack the pen to get at them. You probably have your spawns under control.
Ive gone the other direction... my guy is just the 1, he is for riding and I hunt wild to eat. My tame is free-range (no pen at all) one smashes every pig, deer, or greyling that dares to set foot in my area, providing a good deal of free rocks, wood, meats, and resin etc every day. He has almost completely cleared a whole section of wood and rock near my home.
They are less destructive if you are not at home. But if you hang out at your base for hours, it can be rowdy.

No, animals literally clip through pen walls, and this is not Lox exclusive. I've seen Boars do this frequently, and friends report it as well. This is an actual bug in the game. So if a Lox is going to clip through a pen, it's useless and quite detrimental to your safety. I don't care if you have no problems with Lox, that's just you. You and your opinion.
