Boar charcoal.
I realize this is a just a newbie problem, but gotta grumble anyway. I wish I'd have known what a bottleneck coal was going to be BEFORE I roasted all that boar meat for food. And before I knew that until I had the cores, the only way to get coal was to deliberately burn meat. And that if I DON'T deliberately burn it, I can't put the cooked stuff back in the fire.
I realize that I'll be all right when I find enough cores to build everything I need. It's just weird in the meantime, using burnt food to smelt my ore.

Starting island should have plenty of burial chambers to hunt for surtling cores. Unless RNG is completely against you or you raft off the main island too soon and build on some other island.
Running around the forest if you find any skeletons that aren't in or near a ruin then you should be able to find a Burial Chamber nearby. Be sure to map such locations and cross them off when they are cleared.

Ya, raw boar and neck meat are needed for a couple of recipes. My bad then. Thank you for the correction. Yet I read someone complaining that when using the cooking station, deer raw meat was always cooked/grilled first instead of boar, and that would spoil the meat needed for the stew. Or was it boar raw meat or neck raw meat? The Deer Stew recipe uses cooked deer meat, not raw.

To answer the add on questions.
Cores are gained by.
1) Killing Surtlings, can be found in Swamp biome or sail to bottom of world, and will be loads there.
2) Searching in burial chambers.
At the beginning, the burial chambers is way easier.

The Deer Stew recipe uses cooked deer meat, not raw. And you can't make a deer stew with roasted deer either.

This is why most people build the kiln before the forge. I realize this is a just a newbie problem, but gotta grumble anyway. you can build the kiln to make charcoal and then strip it down and build the smelter switching from one to the other if you don't have enough cores.

What's the issue? I f you can collect ore, you can also collect plenty of cores. There are next door..

Ore is available in Black Forest but cores drop in Swamp, or?
Or as random loot in Burial Chambers.
Which is, imho, quite odd to give plenty of mats and lock them behind random loot in the same biome.

I'm still starting out, but so far I've only found cores as loot in an underground area- the only one I've found is in the black forest.. The tin is in the meadows on shorelines, and the copper is also in the forest, on the surface. Ore is available in Black Forest but cores drop in Swamp, or?

I know very little about the game so far, and I'm finding enjoyable to just learn as I go. But you can wander for a LONG time looking for a resource without finding it. And I sure hope there's another way to find cores.
