Will I Survive?

If i can't make it past 5 days in Don't starve with my friend, will I be able to stay alive in this game and enjoy it?

Don't forget smoke inhalation. Sit down to rest near your crock pot not realizing that spice rack you had to put basically inside the chimney to get it working is now enough to block the chimney flue, and die! (totally didn't happen to me, I swear :DSTghost: )

There is no issue with survival because you can create as many worlds and move items between characters between worlds like in Terraria.

Bad world and progress? Just take all your favorite materials and weapons and bring it to another world to have a better head start.

This should be the tagline of the game. :lunar2019madpig:

The two games have very different mechanics. Both reward you for fighting smart rather than hard but unlike Don't starve, Valheim isn't a survival game where you have to do constant maintenance/progression to survive your surroundings and fighting hard can also be rewarded as long as you manage your stamina well. You don't starve to death without food in Valheim, though without food bonuses your base health is a paltry 25 which makes it pretty easy to get murdered by a simple mistake or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You can progress at your own pace, as the difficulty scaling is based on which biome you are currently in and which bosses you have defeated so it simply won't get harder until you start doing things to make it harder. If you want to spend your first 100 in game days just relaxing and building in the relatively safe meadows biome, that's perfectly fine to do. Though be aware since you plan to play with a friend, when it comes to boss progression it doesn't matter if everyone has gotten that far together. So if your friend decides to go kill a boss without you, the raids can still get harder for you despite you not beating that boss as well. Chances are you plan to progress together though, so it's not likely to be an issue and having shield brothers/sisters can make everything slightly easier.

I've never made it further than that in Don't Starve either. :steamhappy:

Valheim is much easier in that regard since, like has been mentioned, you cannot die from starvation or thirst, and even I have gone very nearly 300 days without dying once.

Once you learn the game, and as long as you're careful, it's not too difficult to avoid dying. I can't speak for others, but I know pretty much all of my deaths have been because of recklessness, not paying enough attention, or stuff like that. (Not counting deaths when I was still learning the game.)

Three basic things to keep you alive (plus obvious things like don't get hit too much or fall off cliffs):
- Keep your HP and stamina up with food
- Always be aware of what is around you; some dangers can be sneaky or sudden
- Don't overestimate yourself, or underestimate enemies or even the land itself (Very hard when starting out.)

Other helpful things:
-Always have the "Well Rested" bonus on. Helps with health and stamina regeneration, it also has a hidden exp bonus as well
-Being cold (at night) hurts regen, better to be warm and around the base at night, especially in the early game
-Same with wet, drop a fire and rest a bit to get dry and reset Well Rested if possible

This game is a light survival in terms of survival games
You cant die from starving or thirst
Its more a exploring , crafting and building game
Food here only rise up your hp and stamina handycap making more easy fighting enemies or explore

The main "survival" mechanic in this game is just don't die. You can't starve to death. It's a very punishing game - if you don't eat (food gives bonus max HP and stamina for a period of time) and your armor/weapons aren't strong enough, you'll die constantly.

You can't die in this game. You could just sit at the starter area doing nothing forever, and never die. You don't need food or shelter or anything. It's not really a survival game. You do crafting and the like to progress, not to survive.

The only penalty this game has is if you keep losing your equipment by dying and not able to get back to your corpse, and also occasional base raids can cause damage and destroy buildings.
They should be rebuildable no problem... and ofcourse you can build defenses but the bigger attacks require your attention. So far with my friend we havent lost anything from our bases ever... but we have always responded to those attacks so we made sure enemies didnt level the place down. (i dont think you can lose the materials, you can pick them back from the ground... just have to rebuild)

Also there are some "automated" defenses you can create yourself which keep the base safe from smaller threats. Its always beneficial to build main base in the starting area... traveling wont be a problem later on and the first area is by far the safest.
