You DON'T have to take a pickaxe to that Stone Pile nor an axe to that wood stack!
Any stone pile or wood stack that you've built yourself can simply be dismantled like all other structures you build, and you get a full refund on resources, too! Just deploy your hammer and then click the middle mouse button (i.e. the scroll wheel) to instantly dismantle it! These stone piles and wood stacks are a FANTASTIC way to store 50 stone or 50 wood at a time, without having them clutter up your chests!

Holy cow this community is toxic:
"big dummy you should have known that"
"why dont u use chests, poopoo head?"
I'm thankful for the opening post. I honestly hadn't considered using the hammer to remove the piles, granted I haven't had too strong a need to reclaim the piles yet.
For the types of posters you referenced, I'd say to disregard the former and then consider if the latter fits into what you do.

Piles serve multipurpose functions. When one is building a massive construction project, to lay piles of building materials one needs is handier and a lot faster when needing access to those materials. When I am using a troll to mine a copper deposit, or a golem silver; if I need to make room in my character inventory, making a chest on the spot, to store materials is simply not feasible. Switching to my hammer, then laying piles roundabout is without question the intelligent choice.

I guarantee you that you wont be able to stack 10 stacks of stone or wood, in the same size of space as a single chest. You can clip stone piles in each other so thats little to no space compared to filling multiple chests. Stone or Wood Piles are pretty much cosmetic unless you don't have a workbench nearby when having a ton of stone - then it's more like storing excess stone in a pile rather then it wasting space.
Chests are just better.
Remember to repair them befor your destroy them or you wont get the full amount of wood back
Not true. they give everything back, damaged or not. :)

Not if you limit yourself to 10 you don't. I stacked 6 boxes worth of stone. And you are forgetting I can use those boxes for other stuff now too.

Whether to use piles or chests depends on my intent and the purpose of the materials. For example, piles are, as previously mentioned, good where you have no bench or for AI pathmaking.
To each their own - a Valheim designed in attribute for which I am eternally grateful.
Regarding the OP's observation: While I didn't have the same discovery with pile deconstruction there were similar revelations I experienced with different game mechanics which will not be named to protect the innocent XD

Like you would even want to pickaxe or chop them....common sense, place it with hammer remove it with hammer. Keep in mind those stacks now stack. With a little finagling one can stack the stacks on top of one another virtually placing one stack within another stack, as long as they are set against something solid.

And piled up wood piles can also endure some hits from other creatures, or funnel them toward a trap, or protect a real building like a girdle. Stone piles make good temporary barriers against trolls, too.
Btw, I believe the other thread was closed (?). In case it's you who asked me, saves on the cloud can be disabled from Steam interface, Library > (right-click on Valheim) > Properties, then uncheck Steam Cloud.

This seems like something that is very obvious. Why wouldn't you try destroying them with a hammer first when the hammer is how you created them?
Stone piles I think are handy in mines as you don't need a workbench to make them and you can just leave them there. Both types of piles (plus fine/core wood piles) are also handy for quick and temporary storage, for the same reason of not requiring a workbench to build.

Stacking stone and wood is an essential tool when doing a major construction project. We have a separate portal base, we use as a central hub. When we have excess stacks of wood & stone, we just stack it there in piles in case it is needed at one of our many auxiliary bases. It is a lot easier and quicker than building a plethora of chests and a structure to hold them all.

I mean sure. You can spend time to try and place stone piles in precise locations or just dump the stone in a chest even if you don't have 50.
