Anyway to disable wind for sailing?
Is there a console command or cheat to disable this stupid wind effect while sailing? I am so tired of the wind not blowing in the one direction I need to sail. This should never have been put into this game. So dumb.

As far as I know, the wind starts at a given direction and speed, and varies in pseudorandom directions and strengths at pseudorandom intervals. There appears to be nothing more sophisticated than "roll new direction, roll new speed, roll duration until next set of rolls." The fact that about 75% of the possible directions for the wind to be blowing are not aligned with the direction you want to go at any given time, statistically speaking, couples with common human cognitive failings to leave many people with the impression that it's somehow unfairly working deliberately against them. There is a mod that makes it so the wind always changes to be at your back when your sails are deployed.
The game seems to be intentionally made so that the wind shifts to be directly against you every few moments. It's incredibly frustrating, and quite noticeable. I spent a LOT of hours playing games like Naval Action and other sailing games.. and this one really sticks out in terms of the frustration of dealing with the wind. Here, you pretty much just don't.. because it just shifts to be against you again.
On the bright side, as far as I know, you can make close to if not true full speed in a longboat provided a wind direction from anywhere within the aft 180 degree arc relative to heading, so about half the time, you should be just fine. Anytime you really have to get somewhere with the wind directly in your face, you can always beat if you want to (good for filling in map and discovering new lands and bumping into serpents), or furl the sail and row if it's that important. But really, even just hugging a quartering headwind under sail power will still give you decent speed.

I must be special. I never seem to have any unexpected issues with wind direction. If I start off in a particular direction with good tailwind, I try to stay on that line as much as possible, however I use boats to navigate and discover the shape of islands more than actually traversing oceans, so the wind will obviously shift for and against me as I change course. I have no issues with paddling if I end up in a headwind. As already mentioned, the game is fairly generous in the angles it allows you to catch full sail.
Alternatively, kill Modor and get the tailwind buff. :)

My only real issue if i feel like the boats should be a little faster because sometimes wind is unfair.

Disabling wind would technically be pointless. If it were not blowing, you would have to swing the rudder to move. If it were blowing in the wrong direction, you also wind up using the rudder to move. It would be no different either way. A more sensible request would be for Stranded Deep-style sailing, as others have described: put the wind at your back at all times, or otherwise move the boat as if it were. The Moder effect already gives you the former, so a full-time Moder effect would work. Or make Moder effect have no cooldown so you can just keep using it.

How about this? I know in the real world the wind tends to blow in a particular direction depending on latitude. I don't remember what that is called but here in the US we mostly have what is called The South-Westerlies where the wind mostly comes out of the Southwest. This makes it harder for people trying to sail from Northern Europe to the Americas, They often sailed to a Southern latitude where the wind was more favorable the traveling West across the Atlantic. The ocean currents also seemed to follow this pattern.
They could set up a similar thing in Valheim where, if you wanted to travel East, your best bet would be to take a northerly course and come back on a more Southerly track. You still may not get favorable winds every time, but you would have a much better chance than you do the way it's set up now.

It would be nice if it worked that way. You can't tack. I've tried and tried. The wind just shifts to oppose you. The wind angle is pretty generous in this game. Unless the wind is heading directly from the direction you're heading, you should be able to always sail either directly or almost directly towards where you're going. If you can't, just try tacking.
Wind is pretty much necessary, right? Or are you suggesting that your sails should always be full in any direction you're sailing? That would seem pretty silly to me.
If you have a headwind you can always turn around and go the other way, right? But NOOOOO! The wind wants to be about 15 degrees off your bow (30 degrees total). This is where it doesn't do you any good. You can't go very far before it shifts there. If you have the Moder power you can have the wind at your back for half your journey. The rest of the time you have to row.
If it weren't for the @#$% contrary wind sailing in this game would be fun. People would want to do it and then maybe they could let us teleport metals.

There's no point in it other than to annoy the player. I can't imagine a reason to keep the wind in the game.
wind was the main way to sail back in these days. apart from having ores to row with. having the wind mechanic allows sailing to have a more realistic feel to it.
i need to look this up but the wind is not really random. theres a chart floating out there some where that shows what dicrection the wind blows at a said time of the day (in game day).
if you dont want to do that heres this.

the wind command is the last one before the debug mode section of this page

If you are steering against the wind, then it really is your own fault.
Look into Tacking, it is a common thing with sailing.
And there is rowing too, so you aren't fully lost, just because the wind turned into the direction you wanted to go.

Any sailor can tell you that the wind isn't always going to be in your favor, so I don't have a problem with the way the wind shifts in this game. BUT it absolutely does seem to be programmed specifically oppose you as already mentioned here. Sail off in any direction and soon the wind will be in your face, change directions and very soon it will shift around to oppose you again. The Moder power works great but if you're going very far it won't get you there.
The devs have stated that the main reason you cannot take raw ores and metals through the portals is to encourage you to sail and explore more and then they make doing so a royal pain in the butt. We are Vikings. We are supposed to love to sail to go discover, explore, trade with and/or conquer new lands, but it is just no kind of fun to sail anywhere in this game.

While I do not want it removed I understand your frustration. This happens to me as well. No matter which direction I choose it seems the wind is programmed to automatically change direction and work against me. It happens so frequently I find it difficult to believe it is not intentionally designed this way. Wind is in my face... ok.. I will go the other direction.... wrong... wind does a 180 and is now working against me again.

If you have beaten Moder, use the mod Passive Forsaken Powers to alleviate that problem. I have tested it, it works great. Always nice to have the wind at my back.
