Click the option to show tools in your game library. Then install the "Valheim Dedicated Server" tool. It comes with a PDF on how to set it up. It doesn't use much PC power as I run that and play the game on the same PC w/ family members that connect.

Obvious remember that for a dedicated server to work, the PC needs to stay on. Like, it doesn't really need to be said, but still.

Cloud based server hosting is an option for those with some pocket change, Alternatively, consider building a mini PC just for doing dedicated server games.

You can "switch" hosts by sharing the world save files.

alternately your friend can host the dedicated server. I own an extra computer tower just to do this kinda stuff.

Yea, and it does not take much of a computer to host a server as the server system does no graphics rendering at all, just relays info between the players and tracks changes made to the world. My server is on an old laptop that can not even play the game.

I will say that your internet should be half way decent though. Also if you plan on hosting on one computer and connecting from another through a lan line ensure that the lan won't interfere with the internet speed. My set up can host 3 people, plus me lan connecting before people experience a bottleneck.

I am not an expert network person, heck I have trouble following the lego instructions of putting a tower together, but if you have some one who can set up a good network with privileges priorities and all that fancy stuff I won't even try to say because I'll just look stupid.

I have a dedicated server. It does exist. Somebody posted above explaining exactly how to do it. You CAN host on the server you own.
