One tip about survival games - when you're driving down the road in real life and feel an impulse to stop and loot the ditch for empty water bottles it means you've been playing DayZ a bit too long.
In Valheim the continuous poaching of deer, chopping down trees, etc. could eventually end irl with jail time and a big fine. So keep track of which world you're in

I find this much more fun to discuss than OPs point.

Personally, Ive gotten a taste of both recently, and have played video games a long time, and I honestly believe its less the games changing to players tastes (which does happen) as much as it is the player both old and new who has evolved themselves. We often nostalgize the past by saying we overcame many obstacles that would prove insurmountable to the youngins today, but in reality, we forget that when we were young just like them, that we were just as prone to rage and foolishness. And we didnt even have guides to tell us what to do. (Btw, a special middle finger to the Ice Man stage in Megaman 1. I have never hated vaacuum cleaners more than that one at the bottom of the pit of the disappearing blocks.)

Things that we found easy back in the day, or had to do because we didnt have the guides to tell us, prove indescribably difficult for some. Mind you, difficult things are always in video games, but now, only a few people take the time to overcome those obstacles because guides exist to spoil them. Buuuut, on the opposite hand, if they grow up playing long enough, they will probably end up craving a difficult challenge, becoming the next generation of folks who will be in our shoes, while we rock in our chairs telling the world of how we were the first to beat Dark Souls, or, if we were *really* crazy, Crash Bandicoot 1.

It's possible. But as things are, I predict Valheim will wind up in a similar state to No Man's Sky in its current iteration: Broad coverage will little depth, save perhaps a couple of mechanical niches the devs have clearly favoured to give the game a little bit of replay value.

Don't get me wrong; I am neither saying nor implying Valheim is a bad game. On the contrary, some of the best sellers on the market are the digital equivalent of junk food. But their intended time of play measures in hours or dozens of hours, rather than hundreds. They aren't meant to last for long.

I do feel like when I run out of bosses in the current state, I'll probably get bored of it. The content of a single world can mostly be repeated but there's not enough variety in repetition to make it rewarding, nor enough variety in exploration to make me want to start new worlds.

However it's also an early access game so being incomplete is not really a surprise...

Sandbox games.

It is where you play on your own pace, and, basically, "create your own story". All that is possible because developers are not focused on developing the game in a "pulling you by the hand", movie manner, and instead, provide you with many interesting ways to interact with the world, many physics features and random content, that you might easily miss if you're not looking for it.

No but if you need your hand held this isn't the game for you

You have an objective, a set of emphasized skills, and a possibility space defined by rules. That's pretty much the practical definition of a game.

What exactly is the question here?

Valheim is a sandbox game, you do what you want to do in the game. You progress with your base(s), your gear, and your travel as much as you like. If it’s not the kind of thing that interests you, there are plenty of other games out there you can check out. :>

Naw there's farming, and milling, and smelting, and 5 bosses, and 9 biomes.

Sandbox games are all like this to some extent.
