Best time is night during a rain in meadows.
They just sit on the ground.

Remember crafting benches prevent spawns... that includes animals.

It's totally possible but not worth the arrows. I've also managed to kill one in midair with a knife. Totally luck. If you *really* want to accomplish this, I suggest using a Draugr Fang. Best bow in the game. Fast with good trajectory. And use wood arrows... they're cheap!

Yeah, it's possible to bring them down. I've done it a couple times by accident. (NEVER hit them when I am aiming for them. LOL)

As I swung my ax to chop a tree a seagull offed itself flying between me and the tree.

I am going to waste tons of arrows now that I know it's possible.

I killed two - unintenionally and in different fights - both with an axe while fighting greydwarfes in the Black Forest in steep terrain along the coast. At the first time i was quite surprised that this is possible :)

I climbed a tower and managed to kill one in flight with the bow. I think it was more luck than skill.
I'm using simple wooden arrows that don't use resin or feathers to manufacture.
I also used a flint spear to save arrows.

Never wasted the arrows but I did down one using the Harpoon. Used to keep that on me for bird hunting and I got pretty accurate with it. Though I usually just used that skill to drag mobs into the ocean as I sailed by.
