Is multiplayer desync still an issue?
My friends and I love this game, but we all stopped playing because of the desync issues. I know there have been several updates and a major release, but I was wondering if it is worth going through the trouble of setting up another dedicated server.

Yeah its borderline impossible to play with international friends still especially if one or two of them doesnt have access to the best net. If you are playing with people fairly close the issue doesnt seem to appear unless youve done massive amounts of terrforming in a small area. Would love to see more focus on the netcode in the near future otherwise my gaming group is gonna have to write Valheim off for good.

Lots of 'lazy devs' type nonsense here aye? Iron Gate are a tiny group of enthusiasts that stumbled into the perfect game formula at a horribly right moment and landed a thousand times the audience they bargained for. They may be struggling to prioritise everything.
It's great that they maintain a separate headless server build for us nerds to host permanent worlds, but the majority of players will never touch the thing. It's always going to be up to community hackers to bring that mode to its full potential.

when valheim first released playing on a US hosted server from Aus i could only be near two US players at a time before the lag issues made everyone lag, now i can be near upto 8 and see a tiny bit of lag but it doesnt lag others out now so its improved quite a bit.

The issues have actually diminished for me after I got a faster internet connection (it was never slow to begin with though), but there is still desync in my multiplayer games.
Both of my friends who play live on a different continent than I, and on opposite sides of that continent too. I get more lag with the one living the farthest from me, even significantly more.
No idea what it would be like with people living at least on the same continent as I, let alone the same country, but I'd imagine a shorter distance = less lag/desync.

Too much terrain editing in 1 location by a lot of people makes it run rough.
Other than that it ran well and was very fun. Anywhere from 1-2 people extra all the way to 10 players it was all fun.

That may be something we look into. However, if modders can do it, I wonder why the developers can't bother to integrate it.

It's a unity game, it's very much possible for modders to mess with many more things. That may be something we look into. However, if modders can do it, I wonder why the developers can't bother to integrate it.
For instance Rimworld was not suppose to have multiplayer but people managed to make it work and have it sync between all players, remote controlling a base.
Modders uses these special community made libraries meant for hooking the game's code to it to allow them to make big changes to the game without needing to mess with the source code of the game itself, it's basically code injection of sorts.
Like Harmony.

Also this for Valheim:
https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/denikson/BepInExPack_Valheim/
And there is server sided characters which forces people to create a new character for said server, not outside of it.

It's still there. With out mods (in my experience) you start to have issues with 5- 6 people. With mods you have the issues with 3 and it's fubar with more.

Well that's... disappointing. Our core group is six players. With as long as it has been and little to no communication coming out about it from the developer, it feels like this is a non-issue for them. From what I understand, they even removed the ability to change some things that helped with it.
It makes me said, but we won't be playing or recommending this game until they fix the issue. It is just too frustrating and takes the fun out of it.
Thank you for your response.

There are mods that tries to resolve some of these by forcing the game clients to sync to just the host, not to each other via peer to peer, and putting all the data on one server which is the hosting server or dedicated server.
You can play with a modded server handling up to 1000 players in theory if you offload all those sync checks to a proper server to send out, rather than having 1000 players trying to send data packets to each other's game to 'sync with me on this part' 1000x over and over again.
Desync problems is because they are trying to turn a single player instance into a multiplayer one...
